From Kona:

I wanted to share some nice recognition for Kona Brewing Co. Our new bottle for Longboard Island Lager (image attached) was recently recognized for “innovation, package design and consumer appeal” by the Glass Packaging Institute (GPI). The GPI announced the winners of its annual Clear Choice Awards at Pack Expo yesterday, Sept. 24th in a press release. Since 1989, the Clear Choice Awards has honored CPG manufacturers who expand the frontiers of glass packaging design by using glass containers in innovative ways.

Kona fans have been exceptionally favorable in their feedback on the new bottle design, but it’s nice to get some extra industry recognition as well.

And here’s the backstory: The proprietary bottle design was introduced in April of this year. While we use glass for all of Kona's portfolio, we also offer Longboard Island Lager in cans for people to take their Liquid Aloha to places where bottles typically aren't allowed such as the beach or pool.

For bottles, we chose to improve the design while also making our footprint smaller. With the help of our glass packaging partner O-I,  we found out we could reduce the weight of our bottles by 11 percent and make them stronger. That changed the shape of our bottles, which meant we could also put more in our shipping containers and reduce our carbon footprint. The estimated savings is 3,375 tons of CO2 emitted per year, which is the same as the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by a car traveling 8 million miles. It’s also equal to taking 638 cars off the road for a year.
