American ex-pat Mike Murphy is a legend in the Italian and Scandinavian beer scene. He's been brewing in Europe since 1999 first in Rome (where he established Rome Beer Company as one of the earliest Italian craft breweries), then later in Denmark and now in Norway at Lervig Aktiebryggeri. He's been the man behind the kettle for many now legendary Scandinavian brews.
Lervig is located in the picturesque Norwegian coastal town of Stavanger. The town had a brewery owned by industrial giant Carlsberg until 2003. The town became very unhappy when that was shut down, but in 2007 were overjoyed to welcome Lervig Aktiebryggeri. Finally they had a brewery back and could now be a real town again. Murphy joined up with Lervig a couple of years ago and has been steadily turning out high quality beers for the local market.
Murph has always been a friend of the family Shelton, and when we heard he was going to Lervig, we started figuring out how we could get some of his beers. Things became even easier when Mikkeller began production of their well-known Beer Geek series at Lervig late in 2012.
Lervig was unveiled in the US for the first time in June of 2013 in Portland Maine at The Festival . We have just received the first shipment that is ready for the market. We have fresh bottles and kegs of two beers from a brewery in Norway that is definitely one to watch. We have Rye IPA (8.5% ABV) and Konrad's Stout (10.4% ABV) in bottles and kegs.
A nice Q&A with Murph is available here.
Here is a pic from the archives of Murph's brewing odessey...Murphill was brewed in Denmark's Amager Bryghus a few years back with Shaun Hill...guess what the name is referencing?
