Pearson is among the first students to enroll in a new professional brewing science certificate program at South College, where he hopes to become certified and pursue a career in the industry.
The six- to nine-month interdisciplinary program includes classroom work in such areas as biology, chemistry and mathematics. It also provides foundational knowledge of the science and business of brewing. The last quarter is spent training at Smoky Mountain Brewery in Turkey Creek under Marty Velas, director of brewing operations for Copper Cellar Corp.
