From GoErie:
A union group opposing liquor privatization was at a local grocery store Wednesday claiming some Erie stores have been selling beer past its expiration date.
Representatives from the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 23, based out of Pittsburgh, were at the Giant Eagle at Yorktown Centre, 2501 W 12th St., to announce five local grocery stores with cafe licenses, which allow them to sell six packs of beer, were selling alcohol past expiration.
Richard Granger, strategic program director for the group, said the union got a tip that at least one Erie-area grocer was carrying expired beer. Union representatives then looked and found expired beer at:
- Giant Eagle stores at Yorktown Centre and in Harborcreek Township;
- Two Wegmans locations -- one on upper Peach Street and the other off West 26th Street; and
- The Tops Friendly Markets at West 38th and Liberty streets.
The six packs ranged between 10 months and a couple of weeks past their expiration dates.
