SAN DIEGO -- The National Marine Mammal Foundation announced today that Southern California's largest craft brewery, Stone Brewing Co., is partnering with the NMMF to support its mission to improve and protect life for marine mammals, humans, and the oceans through science, service, and education. Stone Brewing has a long history of philanthropy mostly focused on local charities and non-profit groups, and Stone's newest location in Liberty Station is near the National Marine Mammal Foundation's headquarters in Pt. Loma.
"We're so honored to have Stone Brewing Co.'s support at a time when the Foundation's research is making news and our conservation work is expanding," said National Marine Mammal Foundation Executive Director Dr. Cynthia Smith. "Stone is all about quality and innovation. We feel very fortunate that Stone recognizes our commitment to healthy oceans and the human-animal health connection, and has chosen to partner with us."
The National Marine Mammal Foundation is a non-profit organization based in San Diego. Our vision for the future is to revolutionize the way we think about marine mammals. By embracing the partnership created between human and marine mammals, we can create a sea change in our global approach to scientific exploration, ocean conservation, and public education.
Recently, the NMMF made international news when we announced our researchers had discovered dolphins have a 'switch' that essentially turns diabetes off. We're currently working to determine if our discovery could play a role in curing diabetes in humans.
Earlier this year, the Foundation responded to the alarming number of baby sea lions stranding on Southern California beaches by providing veterinary and animal care specialists at stranding centers. Currently, our scientists are working with the government to determine what may have caused the strandings.
"We focus our philanthropic efforts primarily on local groups so our money goes back to the community where we live and work. We're dedicated to promoting a culture of social responsibility, collaboration and involvement," said Stone Brewing Co.'s Community Relations Manager Chris Cochran. "The National Marine Mammal Foundation's work, especially in the areas of marine mammal conservation, is something we're excited about supporting."
Since the Stone Brewing Co. was founded in 1996, they have contributed more than $2 million to charitable and community non-profit organizations. In addition to the Stone Anniversary Celebration & Invitational Beer Festival, their largest yearly charitable event which has raised more than $1,000,000 over the years. Stone makes in-kind beer donations exceeding $250,000 in value to more than 300 charitable fundraisers annually.
