Beer Can Boat Regatta Facing Challenges from Recycling (Video)

This year, however, the contestants had more to compete against than just the winds and waves. A recycling program introduced over the past year in Australia's Northern Territory made the aluminum cans that underpin the entire endeavor increasingly valuable commodities. The new government effort, which offers consumers cash refunds of 10 Australian cents per can, or about 9 U.S. cents, saw local supply dry up.
