Brewers Crack Shepherd Neame’s Brewery Codes To Reproduce Brilliant Ale

Exciting news from ThIsIsKent:

BRITAIN'S oldest brewer has re-launched one of its oldest ales – thanks to brewery code-crackers.

Details of Shepherd Neame's 19th century recipes had been lost in an encrypted log for over a century. They were originally written in a code – a series of dots and dashes signifying ingredients and quantities – to avoid being copied and taken to rival breweries.

Now, with the help of archivist and historian John Owen, master brewers at Shepherd Neame have deciphered the logs and used the recipes to revive the lost Brilliant Ale, so drinkers can now taste the tipples of their ancestors.

Head brewer Richard Frost said: "According to brewery records, Brilliant Ale was first brewed sometime between 1825 and 1855, making it our oldest Classic Collection beer to date. Although we've rejuvenated it by using the modern hop variety Cascade, we're staying true to the spirit of this great pale ale, which was hugely popular in its day.
