In an interesting twist, Left Hand Brewing is looking to protect the name of it’s new best-selling Milk Stout Nitro, a beer that uses a Co2/nitro blend in the bottle to produce a creamier smoother mouthfeel. Left Hand found that “Milk Stout Nitro” was already trademarked by Eli Gershkovitch owner of Steamworks Brewery in Vancouver Canada (not Steamworks Brewery in Durango, CO). Left Hand is now fighting the patent claim saying that Eli Gershkovitch has not produced such a “nitro” beer in Canada or the U.S. and is seeking to cancel his trademark. To further the fun Left Hand is also claiming that Eli Gershkovitch fraudulently obtained the trademark in the first place. To make it even MORE interesting, Eli Gershkovitch is also currently involved in a trademark case of the use of the word “Cascadia” as it is used in many Cascadia Dark Ales. We’ll be following this one so stay tuned for details.
