Susquehanna Ale House Opening in Wilkes-Barre To Potential Controversy

imageLast night one of my friends tipped me off to the opening tomorrow (11/16) of the new Susquehanna Ale House at 12 S Main St in the Hardware Bar in Wilkes-Barre, PA.  Susquehanna Ale House has a Facebook page just opened on Nov 7th where they list their Grand Opening as tomorrow (11/16)…and here’s where the fun begins.

imageSusquehanna Ale House is not affiliated with our new Susquehanna Brewing Co in Pittston, PA, although I suspect the names are similar enough to cause some controversy.

To add to the fun, imageSusquehanna Ale House’s new logo is frighteningly similar to the logo for Backyard Ale House….including the shape, color and even font--as well as the “Est.” arrangement.

Susquehanna Ale House is part of the Wilkes-Barre Hardware Bar and it appears to be a re-themed version of their previous Mardi Gras section which caught fire on 11/9.  According to the Citizen’s Voice, and bar owner Ron Kamionka, the new bar will feature up to 15 craft beers on tap and was scheduled for an opening on 11/21.  This date appears to be bumped up to 11/6 according to their FB page.  I have reached out to everyone involved, so stay tuned for more details.

UPDATE:  I did hear from Fred Maier at Susquehanna Brewing Co and he confirms the brewery has nothing to do with the Susquehanna Ale House.

UPDATE 2:  I also heard from the Back Yard Ale House and their response, “we are waiting to hear back from our attorneys to determine an appropriate course of action.”

UPDATE 3:  I heard from Kara @ Susquehanna Ale House.  Her response when asked if they were associated with Susquehanna brewing Co or Backyard Ale House, “

We are not associated with either, but we will carry Susquehanna Brewing Co. for you to enjoy!”

  1. Good luck with anything owned by ron Kamionka he bought up all the bars in downtown harrisburg and turned them into trashy kid joints with fabricated "personalities" each one with a theme lamer than the last. Really set night life back to the level of an underaged high school party.

  2. WOW...that is pretty egregious to say the least. Also pretty funny, if you drive by both bars, Susquehanna Ale House even themed their outside signage to look just like Backyard Ale House's recent remodel. If they really are not in business together then the Hardware Bar people went completely insane. I guess they figured that since Backyard Ale House is right next door to the Scranton Hardware Bar, they could just put a fake version next to the Wilkes Barre Hardware and do just fine.

  3. What a POS this place is!!! Don't go, don't waste your time, and don't ever support these trashy falsely represented establishments in dowtown Wilkes- Barre. Someone needs to run this owner out of town because he will only hinder redevelopment and increase crime rates. What a douchebag!!!

    1. This is downright trademark infringement! I say Backyard go full steam int the legal pursuance of this. It's too similiar NOT to be falsely advertised... logo, design, font & layout ? Really? Let the lawyers handle it and I think Backyard will be ok. Only issue is DID their (Susquehanna) logo appear ANYWHERE prior to backyard opening & creating their logo? The EST dates are very far spread, and if it can be proven that this logo was never in use until now? Well, you don't have to be a rocket scientist!
