Shorts - Black Diamond Lager Brewed for Shanty’s Creek Ski Resort

Shanty Creek Resorts (SCR) is partnering with Short’s Brewing Company, the regionally and nationally acclaimed brewpub in Bellaire, MI, to develop a custom beer celebrating Shanty Creek’s 50th Anniversary in 2013.

The new Short’s beer is slated to be released on Friday, December 21 at Ivan’s Mountainside Grill, located at the base of Shanty Creek’s Schuss Mountain, and will be available exclusively at Shanty Creek’s F&B outlets.

The new Schwartzbier brew, which translates into a German-style black lager, will be called “Black Diamond”— giving it a nod to winter and skiing. Visually, black lagers can be deceiving, featuring an opaque, black color and a full, chocolatey flavor similar to stout or porter. But unlike its dark cousins, Schwartzbier features a bottom fermenting lager yeast, which produces a medium-bodied brew with a smooth finish that will be worth savoring.

“We wanted to do something special to commemorate Shanty Creek’s 50th anniversary in 2013,” says Joe Short of Short’s Brewing Company. “We’ve always believed that our own neighborhood is a great place to come together. And having a world-class ski and golf resort in our backyard makes our neighborhood a pretty special place.”

Chris Hale, Shanty Creek’s vice president, echoes the sentiment.

“There’s a win-win element at play here, and not just for Short’s and Shanty Creek, but also for our guests at both. They get to experience great skiing or golfing while here, along with some of the best craft beer from one of the premier brewpub’s in the Midwest at Short’s, right here in Bellaire.”

This isn’t the first time that Shanty and Short’s have found common ground. In the spring, they team up to create the popular Shanty to Short’s 5k and 10k Fun Run and have often joined forces for seasonal events like Shanty’s Fall Fest or Short’s annual Brew-Ski Bash.

“The dynamic going on in Bellaire is exciting. Short’s and Shanty are bringing more and more people into the area, and once here, they’re finding there’s much more than they expected,” added Matt Drake of Short’s Brewing Company. “Attractions like Torch Lake, Grass River Natural Area, and Glacial Hills Pathway give guests even more to explore, and ultimately, some great venues to work up a thirst.”

To taste Short’s “Black Diamond” lager this winter, visit Shanty Creek’s Ivan’s Mountainside Grill or Lakeview Restaurant. Or to enjoy 20 other unique Short’s brews every-day, visit the Short’s Brewpub in downtown Bellaire. Cheers.
