Oktoberfest In Germany: Worlds Larges Beer Party Off to a Rainy Start

image

I’ve been following along with various news sources all morning to see what’s going on @ Oktoberfest In Germany.  Today is day one of the traditional celebration, or as we like to call it, “The worlds largest beer party.”

The first ceremonial keg of beer was tapped this morning by the mayor of Munich, kicking off the 179th year of Oktoberfest celebrations.  Mayor Christian Ude let out the traditional cry of “It’s tapped” or “O zapft is” in German and the fun was underway.

Unfortunately the opening procession of people music and beer was hampered by rainy weather, but I suspect this will do little to dampen the spirits of the 6-million visitors on their quest to drink over 16-million pints of beer.  For those wondering, a liter or “Mass” of beer will put you back about $12.

Sadly there is considerable security at this year’s celebration due to the threat that such a large crowd may represent a target…although I have a feeling that anyone who would do anything to interrupt the party would be better off if they were caught by security instead of the attendees.

Ein Prosit!
