WILK Friday BeerBuzz–27 July 2012–Blue Point Summer Ale
Every year my family heads to the beach for summer vacation…and while there are many traditions we hold sacred, one of our favorites is simply enjoying a beer on the beach.
I’ve long been asked what beer we take to the beach with us, but rather than simply list them out, what I think people are really asking is, “What beer should I take to the beach?” So today I thought I’d take a run at answering that question.
Because glass is sharp and toes are still very soft, I first decided to limit my search to canned beers. Not only are they safer, but at many beaches they are the only thing you can carry. Since different people enjoy different beers, I also wanted to pick a beer that everyone from a craft beer pro to a craft beer beginner could enjoy while sitting in the sand.
With all of that in mind I chose Blue Point Brewing Summer Lager.
Blue Point Brewing has two claims to fame. 1st they are Long Island’s only brewery, and 2nd (and perhaps most important), they are committed to freshness & flavor.
Located along the water and along the coastline where Blue Point Oysters were once harvested, their name is no surprise….and with a brick direct-fired brew-kettle, their beers are unique.
Summer Ale comes in a 12oz can and it has an easy drinking 4.5% ABV….important to anyone who plans to spend the day on the beach. Summer Ale is an American Blonde style beer and it uses a partial wheat malt to keep the body satisfying and the beer refreshing and drinkable. The beer is well carbonated, so pour slowly and you’ll see the golden color and pure white head. There’s a little honey or buttery scent to the beer and it finishes with an almost lemony tartness. Perfect for the beach and perfect for a hot summer day. Try this one for yourself….and preferably…you should try it on the beach.
Thank you to
Nancy, John & Joe for yet another fun Friday.
The Friday BeerBuzz…bringing good beers and good people together.
As always you can check out the video on-line at the WILK Friday BeerBuzz page by clicking HERE.
Low IBUs and low ABV too makes Blue Point Summer Ale perfectly suited for a coupla three on the beach. All we need now is a beach!
ReplyDeleteThanks to Bill for a fun show again this week and thanks to you for listening!
Best,
John

Perfect timing buzzers. I'm taming my family to the beach on Saturday, but not before I stop at Georgetown Deli & pick up some of this beer. Good show too. Ryan W
ReplyDeleteThis one seems a little light for you guys but I get the theme. Maybe my wife will like it anyway. Eric
ReplyDeleteAgreed Eric on the "lighter" part. We certainly try to cover all styles and types of beer and I do think this will make a great beach beer (for men or women). It's loaded with flavor, it's easy drinking, it's readily available and easily affordable too. Can't go wrong there. Try it and let us know what you think.
ReplyDeleteI'll admit I have not tried it yet so I definitely will do that and report back. Eric
ReplyDeleteI've been listening for over a year and I swear that's the first show I heard today that you didn't have a guest. You guys are even funnier without a guest. I like hearing the guests but you should do that more often with no guest. Amy
ReplyDeleteThanks Amy. It's always fun just hanging with the Friday BeerBuzz team and enjoying a beer.
ReplyDeleteWasn't this beer in a bottle? JT
ReplyDeleteJT...Yes....this was a bottled beer but it is one of the first three beers that Blue Point has canned. Summer Ale, Toasted Lager & their new White IPA.
ReplyDeleteHi guys. I always take a different beer to the beach than I drink normally so I think it was a great idea to show off these beers. I actually like this Blue Point beer a lot on or off the beach. Marty
ReplyDeleteWe do as well Marty. When you send a week at the beach and spend all day on the beach, I like a mix of easy-drinkers and stronger beers too.
ReplyDeleteNo one mentioned how much easier cans are to pack in the cooler and how much easier they are to keep cold. Jason
ReplyDeletePS I DO like this beer too.
Good call Jason. Every year when we arrive at the vacation house the fridge isn't very cold. The cans chill much faster AND yes we fight over valuable cooler space too and cans do pack smaller and don't require an opener either. So many benefits to cans on the beach.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really good beer whether you take it to the beach or not. I really like it! Will
ReplyDeleteHey I just thought of another! Cans pack more easily in our car when we travel too....I must have vacation on the mind today!
ReplyDeleteBlue Point Toasted Lager cans are going with me next week on vacation. We take two cases and everyone loves it so much they don't last until Wed. Chris
ReplyDeleteI really liked the guest free show today. You guys are fun. Chris
ReplyDeleteBeer knowledge and funny jokes. I really liked todays show. Marcus
ReplyDeleteI've had Summer Ale from Blue Point and it's a really great beer. I'm glad you featured it and I think it's an A+ beach beer. JJ
ReplyDeleteHi buzzers. I just saw your video and it was great. You guys are so funny. I can't believe how much fun you have too. Beer chemistry! I'm still laughing at the credits too. Jeremy
ReplyDeleteThat was my first show today too. I'm checking out your old video too. I want your job.
I really like summer beers. I like them better on the beach too. This was a good choice.
ReplyDeleteThank you to everyone for tuning in today....and thank you to Team BeerBuzz for making today such a fun. We've had so many shows with guests I almost forgot how much fun it is to just have a beer with the team. Cheers to everyone...enjoy your weekend and enjoy your vacation if this is your "beach week"
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize Rusty Fender was your camera guy. I love his Saturday show too. Jenny
ReplyDeleteJenny...yes. Cecil Beer Demile aka Rustero Ferndero aka Shadoe Steele is nice enough to direct & film our show. He creates art every week and yes I too love Saturday Night Live at the Oldies on WILK Saturday nights! Happy Birthday Rusty!
