On April 23rd 1516, the famous Reinheitsgebot German Beer Purity Law was enacted in Ingolstadt Bavaria. In our beer-world, the Reinheitsgebot simply means that beer can only contain water, yeast, hops & barley. We take it as a nod in favor of “pure” beer ingredients and a nod against adjuncts in beer. The interesting fact we usually miss is that the Reinheitsgebot was actually meant to price protect bread bakers. Reinheitsgebot ensured that the bread bakers got all of the Rye & Wheat (for good break making) while restricting the beer makers to Barley. Jump ahead 496 years, and the Reinheitsgebot is still adhered to by many German (and non-German) beers….so Happy Anniversary Reinheitsgebot!
