Beer remains the favorite alcoholic beverage for Canadians, who bought $20.3 billion worth of alcohol over 12 months, Statistics Canada said Monday.
In a report spanning the year ending March 31, 2011, the agency said retail alcohol purchases excluding bars and restaurants were up 2 percent during, with beer accounting for $9.1 billion of the total.
By volume, Canadians bought more than 6 billion gallons of beer during the year, a 2.7 percent decrease from a year earlier.
Beer sales amounted to more than 21 gallons per person, the report said.
