I know it’s a very minor anniversary, but given that today was our 10th show, I wanted to do something that recognized this minor-milestone. Now I know most people have cereal that is older than 10-weeks, but I still think a 10-show mark deserves recognition. In honor of our 10th show, I of course chose a 10% ABV beer (with 100IBU). I also chose this beer based on the fact that in the UK (my recent vacation destination), they use “GUBNA” like we use “dude.” So after hearing it spoken a few times in London, it suddenly hit me what beer I should choose.
Now this is a big beer and a beer that no one should take lightly. Don’t let the can or small packing fool you. GUBNA starts with a big citrus-hoppy-hit, and never eases up all the way up to it’s 100IBU. But fear not new beer lovers. GUBNA masks it’s potency with some wonderful flavor and body. This is a great beer and a great double IPA. If you’re not a hop lover yet (and notice I say YET), this may not be for you, but DO give it a try.
So what about the name. The common theory is that it comes from a
scene from Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles Mel Brooks played a crazy governor in Blazing Saddles, and his cabinet meeting generated a lot of harrumphing. When Brooks caught a crony not complying, Harvey Korman chastised him with, “Give the GUBNA a ‘harrumph.’” You’ll read something similar on every can of Gubna. After speaking with Dave Chichura, I found that it was originally named after the slang greeting “Gubna” by the brewmaster Dale Katechis based on some work shirt’s Dale’s brother used in Alabama with “Gubna” on them. As you can see the can features not only the Blazing Saddly quote but a quote from a Lynrd Skynrd song (Sweet Home Alabama).
In Birmingham they love the governor
Now we all did what we could do
Now Watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you?
Tell the truth
The can only features the last line but you get the idea. Quite a funny name for quite a wonderful Imperial IPA…so do check it out.
So with a fond 10-week anniversary wish, I once again say t
hank you to John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.
The Friday Beerbuzz…bringing good beers and good people together.
As always you can check out the video on-line at the WILK Friday Beerbuzz page by clicking HERE
A+ Funny show and one of my favorite beers.
ReplyDeleteNancy is becoming a hop-head. You make us "other female hop-heads" proud Nancy!
ReplyDeleteAmy
This beer comes in a can!?
ReplyDeleteYes yes and yes...I think we are slowly converting Nancy to the Hop-side.
ReplyDeleteThe beer came to us from Sabatini's and yes it comes in cans in a 4-pack. This IS a great beer....try it for yourself.
You guys must be doing something right. My wife would never touch a hoppy beer and Nancy seemed to love it. Keep up the good work and maybe I can convince my wife to buy me GUBNA and try it herself.

Hallo Gubna
ReplyDeleteVery funny and it was a lot of fun listening to you all having fun this morning. I only wish I was able to watch it live too. So when will FOX56 be airing the Friday Beerbuzz?
Ryan W
Excellent choice of beer Bill. This one is underrated in a big way and I'm glad you let everyone know how good it is. I think it's the can that fools people. Don't be fooled beer lovers. Go try this beer.
ReplyDeleteJ
OK beerbuzzers. I hope you're happy. Now all of my colleagues at work are calling each other "GUBNA"
ReplyDeleteThank you GUBNA....we had a lot of fun doing the show GUBNA...g'day GUBNA!
ReplyDeleteMine too! We tuned in this morning and we're having big fun calling each other GUBNA. We've declared it GUBNA day at the office.
ReplyDeleteBlimey! You bloaks seem to have caught on. My mates and I are all using GUBNA all day too.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for happy hour to try a GUBNA but I think we'll all be calling each other GUBNA at the bar too. Try it. It's addictive.
ReplyDeleteBob MM
Great choice of beers GUBNA. I learned quite a bit about the beer (didn't know it was all Summit) and had never heard the stories from Blazing Saddles and Lynrd Skynrd. Great beer and some book learnin' too. Thank you GUBNA!
ReplyDeleteAn excellent beer and echo the can comments above. Don't let the packaging of this or any beer in a can dissuade you. Cans use science! Canned beer doesn't taste like cans, hasn't in years!
ReplyDeleteGubna, a doule IPA and 100IBU, right up my alley! Not for anyone with car keys in their pocket but you can always find a DD to help you out.
Happy anniversary and good show Bill!
And on the drawing board, we're working on a regularly scheduled Friday afternoon Friday Beerbuzz get-together for listeners and beer fans! Working on it, stay tuned!
Best,
John

Thank you GUBNA...looking forward to the Friday PM Beerbuzz!
ReplyDeleteI say it every week but the show keeps getting better and better. I'm looking forward to when you all do an appearance. So when can we get some friday beerbuzz TShirts?
ReplyDeleteAmanda
Thanks everyone and thanks GUBNA! For those asking we ARE planning some Frday Happy Hour get togethers so you can try the Friday Beerbuzz beer with us....stay tuned. Amanda...I have no info on Friday Beerbuzz TShirts but you never know.
ReplyDeleteAnd for those that e-Mailed....I'm continuing to follow the Troegs story...I'm getting mixed reports on the future of the current Paxton St location. Their initial report said it would be a move to Hershey but I'm also hearing the Paxton St facility will remain in use by Troegs...Stay tuned.
Yes I know the band is Lynrd Skynrd and not Alabama...I was going for somewhere between a "band from Alabama" and a song about Alabama and...well you heard what came out....
And finally yes I know IPA is India Pale Ale and I said Imperial Pale Ale...again I had a little marble mouth going on and missed my attempt to say Imperial India Pale Ale.
Thank you again everyone....another fun show GUBNA!
You guys rock the beer. This was a much better choice that the Breck Avalanche they chose on the old station. I'll head over to Sabs and try some.
ReplyDeleteBradd
I don't know much about beer but I like how you guys are so welcoming and how we're sort of all learning about the various kinds of beer at the same time. I'm also glad to hear there's no beer-snobbery like Corbet mentioned. I'm also finding myself tuning in earlier to catch the show before the beerbuzz show and later to see if you continue to talk about beer with Corbet & Snedeker. Thank You, Jake E from Wilkes-Barre
ReplyDeleteYou all make a great team and you're fun to listen to. And Nancy is liking hops!
ReplyDelete10-weeks and no stouts? Come on beer guy!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm still afraid of a beer in a can.
ReplyDeleteSo no Barletta on the air for beer?
ReplyDeleteDo I get extra points for knowing the song and movie and can I cas in my points for beer? Marcus M
ReplyDeleteMarcus...Yes you get beer points if you knew both the song and movie. I don't think even Bosco got the movie? Yes Anon 10-weeks no stouts SO FAR. Give me a chance and I'll cover most every beer style AND Stouts are some of my favorite beers so they'll be good.
ReplyDeleteFear not the canned beer I'd challenge anyone to be able to tell any difference in a canned beer versus the bottled counterpart and it's more environmentally friendly. This is a great beer and I'd hate to see anyone miss out on trying it because of it's packaging.
Mayor Barletta was interested in attending the friday beerbuzz but had other obligations.
So what should we sample next beer lovers???
I've had this beer before and Bill is right. It's a really good IPA and you can't taste the can at all.
ReplyDeleteGood show Gubna.
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get Gubna?
ReplyDeleteHi Jim....GUBNA for the show came from Sabatini's but I've also seen it at Krugel's as well. I'd call both before heading up to see if they still have it in stock since it seems to sell quickly. A 4-pack is around $15 or so
