What goes better with baseball than beer?

Not much, according to White Sox legend Frank Thomas.

The Big Hurt's new product — a namesake lager — is expected to arrive in Chicago-area bars and liquor stores in August. And at 7 percent alcohol, Big Hurt Beer — like its bat-wielding inspiration — also promises to be a hard-hitting presence in the city.

"I'm very picky when it comes to beer," said Thomas, who described the brew as light and crisp. "It's a very good-tasting beer."

Now retired as a player, the 43-year-old Thomas lives part time in Libertyville and has never really left the local baseball scene.

The White Sox retired his No. 35 last year, and a life-size sculpture of the famous slugger was unveiled Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field.

"It's amazing," Thomas said Friday. "I'm overwhelmed."

With the emergence of Big Hurt Beer, Thomas now joins the ranks of other Chicago sports figures — think Michael Jordan and Mike Ditka — who have lent their recognizable names to various products.

Thomas said he hopped on the beer bandwagon after he was approached by a couple of beer industry executives last year. If all goes according to plan, he expects the lager to be sold statewide by October.

"It's a perfect marriage," Thomas said. "Beer and baseball."
