“The palette of songwriting is endless – why not make every word count, like it blows my mind."
The White Buffalo
What: Episode 8 of "The Cold Beer Surf Club” podcast is available for broadcast and download on September 16, 2024.
Who: Host Conner Coffin and special guest singer-songwriter Jake Smith, also known as The White Buffalo. Jake found success early in his career, with his first few EPs and LPs picking up commercial and word-of-mouth traction. But it wasn’t until a bootleg tape made it into the hands of professional surfer Chris Malloy (brother of Keith Malloy, who directed our 805 Beer Film, “Mind Surfing”) that things really started to take off. Chris featured one of Jake’s songs, “Wrong,” in Malloy’s surf movie, Shelter. This eventually led to further film scoring and composing work, with many of his songs featured in FX’s hit show Sons Of Anarchy, Showtime’s Californication, Netflix’s The Punisher, and others.
Synopsis: Our latest episode of the Cold Beer Surf Club is here! In EP 08, 805 Authentico and musician Jake Smith, AKA The White Buffalo, stops by the World Surf League’s HQ to join the Cold Beer Surf Club conversations. While hanging with our host, Conner Coffin, Jake Smith shares stories of his surf upbringing, connections with the Malloy brothers, and his journey from a division-one baseball player to a professional musician. Jake reflects on his early struggles, from waiting tables to his music being featured in Shelter and Sons of Anarchy and selling out shows worldwide. He also dives into his songwriting process, memories with the Malloys, his love for cooking, and teases a new film with 805 Beer, set to release alongside his latest album this month.
