The documentary follows singer-songwriter Jake Smith, much more popularly known as The White Buffalo, as he shares life on the road, offering an exclusive look into his creative process.
WHAT: 805 Beer premiered its latest film project, “Until The Lights Go Out,” featuring 805 Authentico and prolific storyteller through his songcraft, the Emmy-nominated, Southern California-bred singer-songwriter-guitarist Jake Smith, aka The White Buffalo. The film documents his life on the road and coincides with the launch of his first-ever live album “A Freight Train Through The Night,” offering fans an intimate perspective on his creative journey.
“Until The Lights Go Out” is the latest release from 805 Beer Films that highlights the incredible stories of their team of ambassadors, which they fondly refer to as Authenticos - a vast cast of athletes, creators, musicians, and artists who embody the trailblazing spirit of the 805 - the central coast of California where 805 Beer is born and brewed. Past award-winning films include “Rise Up,” (Frank Zummo of Sum 41), “Another Eight Seconds,” (bull rider Stetson Lawrence), “Convergence,” (pro-surfers Conner Coffin, Nate Tyler, and Greyson Fletcher), “Inverted Perspective,” (motocross rider Vicki Golden), “Reaching The Unknown,” (trail rider Gillian Larson), and “The House That Built Me,” (X-Games champion and motocross free rider Tyler Bereman).

WHO: A powerful and prolific storyteller through his songcraft, 805 Authentico and singer-songwriter The White Buffalo’s body of work includes prominent song and soundtrack placements in the worlds of TV and Film including the TV series “Sons Of Anarchy,” “This Is Us,” “Californication,” “The Punisher,” “The Terminal List,” and the films “Shelter,” “Safe Haven” and “West of Memphis.” The last song in the series finale for SOA “Come Join The Murder,” earned The White Buffalo an Emmy Award Nomination. NPR’s “All Songs Considered” hailed The White Buffalo as an “amazing storyteller,” and Classic Rock magazine declared him “America’s darkest country/blues export…imagine a blue-collar Tom Waits, or Nick Cave pumping gas in a station just off the highway.”
WHAT ELSE: A Freight Train Through The Night was recorded live on March 1 and 2 at the Belly-Up in San Diego and finds The White Buffalo reteam with his band including Christopher Hoffee (bass/keys/guitars), and Matt Lynott (drums). The group brought in Mike Butler (The Rolling Stones, Reba McEntire, Phoebe Bridgers) to record and mix the live album. Smith says, “You can feel the energy of the audience, that circular push and pull, between crowd and stage. It’s unique every night, every show. It’s that love and flow that feeds all of us. We are in it together and you can really feel it in these recordings. We have a long history with the Belly-Up and brought in Mike Butler to capture the audio and mix, so this album sounds like you are in the room.”
Named after a line from the song “How the West Was Won,” the new live album A Freight Train Through The Night encapsulates nomadic life and the nights of a traveling musician, as well as the group’s own gloves-off approach to their live performances.
