Terrapin Names Beer After First Female Brewer on International Women's Day

From Terrapin:

Atlanta, GA  - On International Women's Day, Terrapin Beer Co. hosted over 20 women in the beer industry for a special lunch and learn and unveiled the name of their 2022 Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day beer. "Have You Hurd?", a nod to Terrapin's first female brewer and current Brewing Supervisor, Jess Hurd, will be available in April at Terrapin's Atlanta and Athens Brewery and Taproom.

At the event, Hurd found out that the beer was getting named in her honor. “I was shocked, but incredibly humbled. Terrapin has taught me a lot over the years, but also continues to challenge me by encouraging me to teach others.”

The beer itself, a SMaSH (Single Malt and Single Hop) IPA, uses the special Pink Boots Blend and malt from Riverbend Malthouse. “Because we were doing just one malt, we wanted to have a high-quality malt that no one else would have,” said Olive Overmoyer, Terrapin Quality Assurance Technician. “Riverbend Malthouse is a leader in the Craft Malt arena, and we are proud to have come up with a blend that is unique but also has a nod to Jess [Hurd], as the blend is partially made up of malt from the state of Tennessee, where she’s from.”

Terrapin is proud to be an industry leader in diversity and inclusion, and to participate in the Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day where a portion of every sale of “Have You Hurd?” will benefit Pink Boots Society. In addition, today’s brew is particularly special as several members from Terrapin helped spearhead the launch of the Athens chapter, which became an official chapter at the beginning of February.

“Women are an integral part of how this industry continues to propel forward and I’m proud that many of our own employees at Terrapin have stepped up to be a part of creating the Pink Boots Society Athens Chapter. Terrapin continues to lead conversations about expanding diversity in this industry, and this is one great example of the powerful voices of women in beer,” said President Dustin Watts.

Since 2018, female representation in brewing at Terrapin has increased 90% and in 2021, 45% of all new hires were female.
Today’s lunch and learn included an interactive sensory panel experience, malt education from Riverbend Malthouse, and information about the Pink Boots Society Athens Chapter formation.
