For this foray into the flavor frontier, we looked deep into the interior of France for inspiration. We conceptually merged the complex reddish brown sour ales brewed in Flanders with the light and fresh profiles of red wines from the Loire and Burgundy regions. The result is a medium bodied, ruby hued brown ale with subdued malty notes, contrasted by the tartness produced through kettle souring and the bright fruit notes from the fermentation of pinot noir grapes, black currants and cherries. Beer with a Purpose
You may have seen our new MHT India Pale Lager cans floating around social media and parts of Western Maine over the last few weeks. This new collaboration project with Maine Huts & Trails has been an exciting way for us to showcase an organization that we are enamored with, as well as introduce to the public one of our favorite beers to date. But rather than speak to the quality of the liquid, I would actually like to communicate a bit about the history of the special land that Maine Huts & Trails is helping to protect.
The Maine Huts & Trails footprint rests on a sizeable chunk of the Bigelow Preserve and Flagstaff Lake watershed. Its trail network spans over 80 miles and connects rt 27 in Carrabassett Valley to rt 201 in the forks, roughly a 90-minute drive by car. In the mid 1900’s, the area was home to one to a controversial purchased several entire towns, flooded them, to create hydroelectric power and what is now the Flagstaff Lake.
Geologically speaking, this area is home to the highest concentration of 4000-foot mountains in the state of Maine including Saddleback, Mount Abraham, Mount Spalding, The Crockers, The Bigelows, and Maine’s second highest mountain, Sugarloaf. Nestled between the Carrabassett River and Flagstaff Lake, this area is also a water lover's paradise. For generations, the area has served as a choice location for hunters, hikers, snowmobilers, runners, boaters, and general outdoor enthusiasts alike. And with Maine Huts & Trails committed to the region, those Traditions will continue into the future.
Baxter is always proud to support our community but especially so with this project. A portion of all proceeds from this beer will go directly back into the maintenance and upkeep of the 80-mile trail network so that thousands of Mainers can enjoy the land just as we, here at Baxter, do.
As a bonus, we’ve added in the can packaging for Hopothecary DIPA(7.7%-AbV, 12oz cans, stay tuned for release info), Gopher It triple IPA (2019, 9.5%-AbV, 16oz cans) & Joli kettle sour ale brewed with strawberries, raspberries, white wine grapes and lactose (5.7%-AbV, 12oz cans).
