WHAT:
After seven years of success in Mexico, craft brewery Cerveza Mexicana Bocanegra is expanding into the United States with two beer varieties - a pilsner and dunkel weizen. While both pair perfectly with Mexican fare, they can of course be enjoyed with a wide array of cuisines.
The pilsner is a light bodied beer. Its aroma is emphasized by a floral bouquet with its European hops. A beer with sweet touch perfectly balanced with low bitterness, perfect for pairing with seafood, creamy pastas, light meats and refreshing desserts like key lime pie. It was awarded with a silver medal at “Expo Cerveza Mexico” in 2016.
The dunkel weizen has origins in the Bavaria region in Germany, but it’s strength and flavor really come from the Mexican craftsmanship. The beer uses 50% wheat malt and then a combination of caramel and black malt, giving the beer a hint of toasted caramel and coffee flavors. The additional weizen yeast’s delicate process delivers spicy touches of clove and banana, making it the perfect complement to a perfectly cooked steak, heavier sauces and stews or chocolate desserts.
WHY:
While Mexican import beer is no stranger to the U.S. market, Bocanegra aims to change the current perception of the category. Bocanegra is bringing the richness of Mexico’s culinary tradition – where products, techniques, and recipes from all over the world have intersected to create a hugely underappreciated gastronomic culture.
WHO:
Named in honor of Francisco Gonzalez Bocanegra, the Mexican poet who wrote the lyrics of the Mexican National Anthem in 1853, Bocanegra was created by two friends, Sergio “Checo” ElÃas Gutiérrez and Guillermo González Beristáin, who decided to make a great beer that perfectly paired with the Mexican gastronomy, temperature, culture and people of the country.

WHEN:
Both beers are now available in New York and Los Angeles.
Bocanegra is part of the craft portfolio within AB InBev’s ZX Ventures division, which contains the company’s international craft and specialty beers.
