From Pelican:
Pacific City, OR (March 2, 2018)—Pelican Brewing Company this week earned another Silver medal for Father of All Tsunamis Imperial Stout aged in rye whiskey barrels. Father takes home the prize in the barrel-aged category at the 4th annual Oregon Beer Awards held in Portland this week at Revolution Hall.
The Oregon Beer Awards select and celebrate Oregon’s top beers in 24 categories, and honor the state’s exceptional breweries, bars and festivals in seven additional categories. It is the only statewide double-blind beer tasting competition in Oregon.
Full of rich roasted flavors reminiscent of dark chocolate and espresso, Father of All Tsunamis takes on its aromatic character after aging in Rye whiskey barrels. With layers of spiciness, vanilla and caramel coming from these barrels, the Imperial Stout emerges with a richness and balance beyond any stout ever created at Pelican before now.
Ingredients include pale malt, malted white wheat, Midnight Wheat malt, Black Prinz malt, pure cane sugar, Magnum hops, Willamette hops, pure local water, and pure ale yeast:
ABV: 11.2% IBU: 55 PLATO: 24º
“Father is a pretty darn special beer and we’re honored that our colleagues have embraced Pelican’s creation—it’s really an incredible Imperial Stout,” says Darron Welch, founding brewmaster, Pelican Brewing Company. “Father’s recipe was created specifically for our recently added barrel-aged series—a stout black color, dark chocolate, coffee-like roastiness combine with the inherent spiciness of the rye to make an incredibly delicious beer.”
With a nod to the popularity of Pelican’s original barrel-aged masterpiece Mother of All Storms, English-style Barleywine aged in Bourbon Barrels, the brewery continues its vision for creating recipes that combine beer, spirits and barrel flavors. Fellow fanatics of Pelican’s barrel-aged series have another year of tasty treats ahead with quarterly releases of exquisite beers like Queen of Hearts, Saison Ale aged in Old Tom Gin Barrels, Captain of the Coast, Wee Heavy Ale aged in Dry Fly Wheat Whiskey Barrels, and of course the annual return of ‘Mother.’
