From Deschutes:
December 13, 2016 – Bend, OR– The Business Intelligence Group named Deschutes Brewery as a global sustainability leader today as part of the 2016 Sustainability Awards program. The Sustainability Awards honor those people, teams and organizations who have made sustainability an integral part of their business practice or overall mission.
Serena Dietrich, sustainability manager for the brewery, said, “Going the extra mile to do the right thing wherever possible is built into our standard operating procedure. Our entire team is always thinking of ways to use fewer resources, by doing everything from implementing new recycling programs to thoughtful management of our water usage.”
The brewery is leading the industry with sustainability and social efforts such as:
- Restoration of one billion gallons of water into the Deschutes River every year to offset the company’s water usage through the Deschutes River Conservancy water leasing program
- Donation of one dollar for every barrel of beer sold, plus a traveling Street Pub that gives 100 percent of profits to charity, to help a wide range of nonprofits in communities across the country
- Purchasing/offsetting 100 percent of electrical power usage from renewable sources through local certified renewable energy generation projects, helping to earn designation as a “Green Power Partner” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
- Expanding alternative transportation options with the implementation of electric car/Tesla charging stations and a new bike parking structure
- Nurturing local business partnerships such as buying local beef for the public houses’ burgers from farmers who feed their cattle on spent grain from the brewing processes
“Our judges made it clear that Deschutes Brewery should be recognized for its sustainability efforts,” said Russ Fordyce, managing director, Business Intelligence Group. “The brewery’s innovation and leadership should serve as a model for organizations around the globe. Congratulations to the entire team.”
