We brought you this beer back in Sept, and now the full details from Narragansett:
PROVIDENCE, R.I.; February 16, 2016 – It starts as the faintest of sensations in the back of your mind – like the memory of a taste from years ago. Endlessly and relentlessly that memory grows louder, moving from the back of your mind to the tip of your tongue. “Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn,” you begin to chant, over and over. Soon the tantalizing scent of hops and malt begins to permeate the air as your chalice slowly fills, rich and red. You eventually surrender to the approaching darkness and bring the concoction to your lips, your eyes peeling wide as you swallow the last drop of madness. Cthulu awakens in his house at R’lyeh, hidden deep below the black rolling waves, and he listens for your chalice to fall.
Narragansett Beer today announces the release of I Am Providence Imperial Red Ale, the fourth installment in its Lovecraft Series of beers honoring the legendary horror author and Providence native, H.P. Lovecraft. The latest chapter in the series pays tribute to Lovecraft’s adoration for his hometown by heralding his famous words – “I Am Providence.” Later inscribed on his gravestone in 1977, this resonant phrase lives on as a tribute to Lovecraft and anyone who has ever called Providence home.
I Am Providence pours a mysterious dark red with a complex amalgam of flavors. The blend of Pilsen, CaraRed, and Vienna malts lead to flavors of biscuits and caramel, where the Warrior and Citra hops bring a counterbalance of pine and citrus. The can, designed by local Providence artist, Gunsho, is emblazoned with Lovecraft’s notorious “High Priest of the Great Old Ones” – Cthulhu – wrapping his tentacles around the Rhode Island State House and uprooting the iconic landmark of Lovecraft’s beloved hometown.
“Lovecraft was a self-described recluse and outsider, taking pleasure in the topographical and architectural scenes of his environment,” said Mark Hellendrung, President of Narragansett Beer. “He had a deep sense of local preference, declaring that, ‘It is New England I must have – in some form or other. Providence is part of me – I am Providence.’ It was with similar spirit and love of place that we endeavored to bring back Narragansett Beer a decade ago. This beer is an extension of the unwavering connection to the city that we both call home.”
Brewed under the supervision of Narragansett head brewmaster Sean Larkin, I Am Providence Imperial Red Ale is 8% percent ABV and 62 IBUs. Priced between $11.99 - $12.99 SRP per six pack of 16-ounce tallboys, I Am Providence Imperial Red Ale will be distributed throughout New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina and Florida. While the beer is rolling out now, the exact timing and availability of I Am Providence Imperial Red Ale will vary per market.
Serving as the series’ third chapter (fourth release), I Am Providence Imperial Red Ale follows three highly lauded, superior quality Lovecraft Series beers. Most recently, at the 2015 Tastings World Beer Championship, both Innsmouth Olde Ale (chapter one) and Reanimator Helles Lager (chapter two) were awarded gold medals. Innsmouth Olde Ale also received a silver medal at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival.
