Terrapin Beer Co. Unveils Ales from the Wood Series

Terrapin Beer Co. has partnered with Georgia craft distiller Richland Distilling Co. to create the first release in Terrapin’s Ales from the Wood series, Richland Reserve Double India Pale Ale.
Richland Reserve is the culmination of over a year of quiet consideration. Vintage 2014Hopzilla filled newly-emptied Richland Rum barrels and was left to rest. Over the course of that year, IPA and rum-infused wood melded & metamorphosed to create a distinct medley of flavors bound to inspire the minds and warm the hearts of the most discerning beer aficionado.

A pair of Georgia’s liquid artisans come together by combining two art forms, craft brewing and craft distilling. "Richland Reserve", the first in our "Ales from the Wood" series, is made from vintage 2014 "Hopzilla" Double IPA & has been masterfully aged in Richland Rum barrels for over one year.
Though retired, Hopzilla Double IPA is probably still fresh in the minds (and palates) of many a hophead out there. However, don’t be surprised to find that rum barrel aging turnedHopzilla into a much different beast. Expect aromas of dark stone fruit, mellow pipe tobacco, oak, and rich alcohol, followed by flavors of caramelized sugar, plums, figs, and unrefined cane syrup. The finish brings a bitter hop presence, wood tannins, and alcohol warmth. Richland Reserve carries a noticeable depth that could only be found in such a perfectly aged brew.
Malts: Maris Otter
Hops: Warrior, Chinook, Centennial, (Dry Hop - Citra)
Other: Aged over one year in Richland Rum barrels
ABV: 12.0% (after aging)
IBU: 120 (before aging)
OG: 22*P
Terrapin Beer Co. will be releasing Richland Reserve at a brewery tasting room event on Sunday, Nov. 15. This special tour will be $30, and each guest will receive 36 oz. of beer to sample at the brewery, a special Richland Reserve glass, and a 22 oz. bottle of Richland Reserve to take home. Terrapin brewmaster Brian "Spike" Buckowski and Richland Rum's Erik Vonk will both be present at the event to discuss Richland Reserve and the barrel aging process.
Richland Reserve will be available in 22 oz. bottles in very limited quantities in the state of Georgia only. Each bottle will be packaged in an artfully designed special-edition box. Look for Richland Reserve to appear on retailer shelves in mid- to late-November.
