Santa Fe, New Mexico - Santa Fe Brewing Company (SFBC) is excited to welcome new
Brewmaster Bert Boyce to the team. Bert has worked in the brewing industry for 20 years,
at breweries ranging from Sudwerk in Davis, CA to the Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams).
While with Sam Adams, Bert spent 4 years as the Brewing Manager for the R&D brewery in
Boston, during which time he tested many new brewing techniques and equipment designs, as
well as developed several new beer styles. He then switched gears and spent 3 years at their
Cincinnati brewery as the Assistant Brewing Manager, which produced 800,000 BBLs per year.
When asked why Bert chose Santa Fe Brewing Company, he said, “It seemed to have a little bit
of everything, obviously a bright promising future, a pretty aggressive strategy for growth,
awesome beer already, the barrel room program, the fact that there’s a centrifuge. It was already a
successful company. It’s the biggest in the state and growing, with an awesome team/family. It
seemed like a place I could sink my teeth into and make a difference, but there were already so
many good pieces in place. I was looking at a company on the rise.”
In his new position, Bert will be focused on taking the quality and diversity of the beer and the
efficiency of the operation to the next level. He plans to maintain a big-picture philosophy,
exploring new avenues and opportunities for the brewery, as well as having fun with new styles
and helping out Los Innovadores. Be on the lookout for this year’s new Winter Seasonal, New
Mex-style! His larger goals for the brewery include helping to facilitate owner Brian Lock’s plans
for expansion, making certain that growth is achieved efficiently and responsibly, so that SFBC is
always brewing the same high-quality beer well into the future. When asked how Bert views
brewing differently now, he replied, “After 20 years, you brew for the challenge, not so much the
fun anymore. And so the challenge is to make whatever beer you’re making today as good as it
possibly can be.” As far as drinking the beer goes, Bert leans toward dry and hoppy styles, and
has recently been enjoying the new Santa Fe Gold and Autonomous Collective, SFBC’s Double IPA.
Regarding the brewery’s new addition, Brian Lock had this to say, "I am so excited to have
Bert join the SFBC team. The experience and attention to quality he brings to the table
will benefit SFBC for years to come. New Mexico is home to many great brewers and
adding Bert Boyce will make that list even stronger." Recently, Santa Fe Brewing Co. won
2nd place for Oktoberfest and 3rd place for Imperial Java Stout at Canfest in Reno. With Bert on
the team, Santa Fe Brewing is hopeful for many more to come.
