FACT SHEET: SAMUEL ADAMS NITRO WHITE ALE
· Nitro White Ale will be released for the first time and is one of the inaugural offerings of the Samuel Adams Nitro Series. Nitro beers use nitrogen in the carbonation process vs. standard CO2 and are known for their captivating cascade and smooth creaminess, yet for many, nitro is solely linked to stout. Our brewers experimented with a variety of styles and discovered that nitro truly can be the missing fifth beer ingredient.
· White-capped and lively, the billowing white head of this distinctive nitro brew softly cascades into bright gold. The first sip reveals a smooth velvety taste with light wheat character and hints of orange, while an undercurrent of peppery spices from the Grains of Paradise adds a bright finish.
· Nitro adds creaminess to the White Ale’s wheat character, while the spice and citrus keep it vibrant. There are hints of orange and pepper in the aroma of this medium-bodied brew.
· Pairing with Food: The wheat and citrus of this brew are a great complement to the light flavors of salads and fish but can also help cut the richness or heat in dishes like chili verde. The smoothness that the nitro creates is also fun to pair with dishes that have a similar creaminess like Chevre cheese while the spice can complement desserts like spiced cookies.
· Pricing & Availability: Samuel Adams Nitro White Ale will be available nationwide beginning in January 2016 on draft and February in 4-packs of 16oz. cans for a suggested retail price of $8.99-$10.99 (price varies by market).

FACT SHEET: SAMUEL ADAMS NITRO IPA
· Nitro IPA will be released for the first time and is one of the inaugural offerings of the Samuel Adams Nitro Series.
· Boldly bitter, yet surprisingly smooth, Nitro IPA has an initial cap of creaminess which reveals a brawny hop intensity beneath it. The hop character leads with notes of resinous pine and citrus for a flavorful, lingering finish. This 7.5% ABV, medium-bodied brew is deep amber in color.
· The hop varieties used in Nitro IPA impart unique flavors and aromas to the brew:
o Amarillo: Orange, grapefruit and notes of tangerine with some sweetness
o Centennial: Medium citrus floral
o Galaxy: Citrusy, spicy and herbal with hints of green fruit and red berries
o Polaris: Intense floral, fruity, subtle mint
o Simcoe: Strong pine character
vo Zeus: Earthy and spicy with soft hints of citrus
v· Pairing with Food: The brash hop character of this IPA is mellowed a bit by the nitro leaving a surprisingly smooth brew that makes a great pairing for boldly flavored dishes. The hop bitterness helps cut the fattiness of fried foods like fish & chips and richness of cheeses while enhancing the spice of jambalaya. For the softer side, the spiciness of the hops is a great complement to the spice pumpkin cake while cutting its sweetness.
· Pricing & Availability: Samuel Adams Nitro IPA will be available nationwide beginning in February 2016, in 4-packs of 16oz. cans for a suggested retail price of $8.99-$10.99 (price varies by market).

FACT SHEET: SAMUEL ADAMS NITRO COFFEE STOUT
· Nitro Coffee Stout will be released for the first time and is one of the inaugural offerings of the Samuel Adams Nitro Series. Nitro beers use nitrogen in the carbonation process vs. standard CO2 and are known for their captivating cascade and smooth creaminess, which works well with stouts. Our brewers also experimented with a variety of styles and discovered that nitro truly can be the missing fifth beer ingredient for a number of different beer styles.
· Smooth, velvety cream cascades into a jet black, darkly enticing brew, revealing a rich, robust character. The dark roasted malts create notes of bittersweet chocolate with hints of dark fruit, while Sumatran Mandheling and Indian Monsoon Malabar coffee adds a deep roast dimension.
· Sumatra Mandheling coffee from Indonesia is grown in volcanic soil and creates rich chocolate and earthy flavors, along with a mild acidity. Indian Monsoon Malabar coffee beans are exposed to monsoon rain and winds for up to four months, to mimic the conditions Indian coffee beans faced when shipped to Europe during Great Britain’s rule. The beans develop a smooth complexity with lower acidity in these conditions.
· Pairing with Food: The rich, dark flavors of Nitro Coffee Stout make it a great pairing for a variety of foods. Creamy cheeses or game meats like venison bring out the beer’s dark fruit notes, while the sweetness of chocolate desserts is balanced by the brew’s roasted character. Oysters are also a classic stout pairing, as the briny character of the oysters is a perfect foil for the dark, roasty notes of the stout.
· Pricing & Availability: Samuel Adams Nitro Coffee Stout will be available nationwide beginning in February 2016, in 4-packs of 16oz. cans for a suggested retail price of $8.99-$10.99 (price varies by market).

SAMUEL ADAMS 2015 LONGSHOT CONTEST
ELEVATES HOMEBREWING CHAMPIONS TO THE NATIONAL STAGE
Winning Homebrewers Announced at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver
BOSTON, September 29, 2015—The brewers at Sam Adams today announced the three winning homebrewers from the 2015 Samuel Adams LongShot American Homebrew Contest. The winning brews were unveiled at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, one of the most celebrated craft beer events attracting tens of thousands of beer lovers from across the United States. This year’s winners – Tim Thomssen’s Raspberry Berliner Weisse, Kevin Nanzer’s Belgian Golden Strong Ale, and Samuel Adams employee Colin Foy’s Flanders Red Ale – will have their beers featured in the 2016 Longshot Variety Pack, available nationwide next spring. These three homebrewers join an impressive group of past LongShot American Homebrew Contest winners, including some who have gone on to become professional brewers, most recently 2013 winner Cesar Marron, who opened Sketchbook Brewing Company in Evanston, IL, following his win.
Homebrewing has a long and storied history in the United States, with famous figures like George Washington, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and even President Barack Obama, counting themselves among the homebrewing ranks. The American homebrewing community celebrated a milestone in 2013, with Mississippi and Alabama becoming the 49th and 50th states to legalize homebrewing. Today, the American Homebrewers Association estimates that there are about 1.2 million homebrewers in the United States, with almost 800,000 of them having begun homebrewing within the past decade. Together, American homebrewers produce more than two million barrels of beer annually.
“There’s no better time than now to be an American craft brewer or homebrewer. This year’s LongShot American Homebrew Contest winners serve as shining examples of that passion and American homebrewing ingenuity,” said Samuel Adams Founder and Brewer, Jim Koch. “The first batch of Boston Lager I ever brewed was at home in my kitchen in 1984. Since then, I’ve seen the community grow exponentially. What’s remained constant over the years is the passion for beer and the commitment to experimenting in brewing.”
Samuel Adams also recognizes skilled homebrewers within its own brewery. Each year employees from all across the company showcase their passion for brewing and one employee winner’s beer is included in the LongShot variety six-pack alongside the two consumer winners. This year’s employee winner is Colin Foy, who has worked at the Cincinnati brewery for a little over two years and won with his Flanders Red Ale.
About the winners:
· Tim Thomssen’s Raspberry Berliner Weisse, Lincoln, NE:
At first look, you notice the pink frothy head of this Raspberry Berliner Weisse. The bright notes of raspberries are balanced by refreshing tartness, and the beer finishes with a wonderful sweetness and a lingering sour character that draws you back for another sip.
· Kevin Nanzer’s Belgian Golden Strong Ale, Mountain View, CA:
This Belgian Strong Ale has a wonderful aroma of pepper, clove and fruits that are balanced by the subtle malt flavors and the citrus and bitterness from the hops. At 9% ABV, this beer should be sipped slowly to savor the delicious flavors.
· Colin Foy’s Flanders Red Ale, Cincinnati, OH:
This Flanders Red was brewed the traditional way with “younger” beer blended with beer that has been aging in wood. The more “mature” beer is aged for several months in wood with Brettanomyces and Lactobacillus that contribute fruity, musty, tart and acidic flavors.
How the winners are chosen:
· The beers are judged on the aroma, appearance, flavor and mouthfeel according to the style category under which it was submitted. Eight semi-finalists were selected during the first round of judging conducted at three regional judging locations in New England, California and Illinois.
· The final winners are ultimately selected from a panel of industry judges including Jim Koch. The winning brews were judged as the best examples of their style. Industry judges include Bob Townsend of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Tony Forder of Ale Street News, John Holl of All About Beer Magazine, Jason Alstrom of Beer Advocate, Don Russell (aka “Joe Six Pack) of Philadelphia Daily News and esteemed beer writers Jay Brooks and Lisa Morrison.
· The Sam Adams employee winner is voted on by visitors to the Boston Brewery.
The 2016 Samuel Adams LongShot American Homebrew Contest variety six-pack will be available nationwide in select retail stores in the spring of 2016. The variety pack will include two bottles each of Tim Thomssen’s Raspberry Berliner Weisse, Kevin Nanzer’s Belgian Golden Strong Ale and Colin Foy’s Flanders Red Ale.

BOSTON ― September 28, 2015 ― Samuel Adams today announced that New Jersey-based craft brewery Flounder Brewing Company has been selected as the winner of the 2016 “Brewing and Business Experienceship,” a unique mentoring opportunity awarded to one craft brewer annually as part of the Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream program.
Similar to an internship, the Experienceship provides hands-on educational and enrichment opportunities tailored to the winning brewery’s needs. As part of the program, the team at Flounder Brewing Company will receive a trip to the Samuel Adams Boston Brewery for coaching and mentoring from a variety of Samuel Adams experts and brewers involved in ingredients sourcing, sales and distribution, package design, and more. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to brew a collaboration beer with the Sam Adams brewers and receive funding to attend industry events such as The Great American Beer Festival.
Founder Jeremy “Flounder” Lees, and his two co-founders, his brother Dan and cousin Billy, were selected from craft brewer applicants that are part of Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream, a micro-lending and coaching program for small business owners working in food, beverage, and craft brewing. The brewers were chosen by a panel from Sam Adams, based on their passion for brewing quality craft beer, current success, and strong growth potential.
“This is our fifth Brewing and Business Experienceship, and the program continues to provide our fellow craft brewers with valuable support and advice – something I had trouble finding when starting Samuel Adams 31 years ago,” said Samuel Adams founder and brewer Jim Koch. “I first brewed Sam Adams in my kitchen and the Flounder Brewing Company first brewed in their garage, so we understand the challenges of expanding and scaling as an up-and-coming brewery. I look forward to working and collaborating with the Flounder Brewing family as they continue to provide innovative craft beers in New Jersey and beyond.”
In 2005, Flounder along with his brothers and cousin began experimenting with brewing in the garage of their 90 year old Ukrainian grandmother, Babi. Their grandfather, a beekeeper and the original artisan in the family, was the inspiration for the Flounder Brewing Company’s flagship beer, Hill Street Honey Blonde Ale. The family sought out a $6,000 loan from Brewing the American Dream when they decided to purchase a small system and move from a garage to a nano-brewery of their own in Hillsborough, NJ. Flounder Brewing has continued to grow and now has more than ten seasonal and year-round craft beers and will be expanding and hiring their first employees in early 2016.
“We’re really excited to have been chosen for the Brewing and Business Experienceship,” said Lees. “Our beers are brewed with the hope that every time you crack one open, you’ll have a good time, take a moment, and enjoy the people around you. We encourage everyone to experience their beer. This program will help us provide that experience to more drinkers and help us expand. We can’t wait to meet with the team at Sam Adams, and really look forward to visiting the Boston brewery.”
Samuel Adams Continues to Support Fellow Craft Brewers
Brewers who have received the unique Experienceship include San Diego, CA-based ChuckAlek Independent Brewers, San Francisco, CA-based MateVeza, Rochester, NY-based Roc Brewing Co. and Denver, CO-based Brewery Rickoli. Each brewery released a limited availability collaboration beer with Sam Adams, and has received a loan as well as coaching through the Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream program. To date, the program has provided loans to nearly 30 craft brewers across the country in an effort to continue to support the booming craft beer industry. As Jim Koch frequently says, “We either all succeed together or not at all.”
Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream was launched in partnership with Accion, the nation's leading nonprofit provider of small business capital and coaching. Since 2008, through the support of Brewing the American Dream, Accion has lent more than $6.4 million to 625 small food and beverage businesses. Just as important, the program has coached or mentored over 5,000 businesses and created or saved more than 2,600 jobs. To learn more please visit: http://btad.samueladams.com.
About Samuel Adams and The Boston Beer Company
The Boston Beer Company began in 1984 with a generations-old family recipe that Founder and Brewer Jim Koch uncovered in his father's attic. Inspired and unafraid to challenge conventional thinking about beer, Jim brought the recipe to life in his kitchen. Pleased with the results of his work, Jim decided to sample his beer with bars in Boston in the hopes that drinkers would appreciate the complex, full-flavored beer he brewed fresh in America. That beer was aptly named Samuel Adams Boston Lager, in recognition of one of our nation's great founding fathers, a man of independent mind and spirit. Little did Jim know at the time, Samuel Adams Boston Lager would soon become a catalyst of the American craft beer revolution.
Today, The Boston Beer Company brews more than 60 styles of beer. It relentlessly pursues the development of new styles and the perfection of classic beers by searching the world for the finest ingredients. Using the traditional four vessel brewing process, the Company often takes extra steps like dry-hopping, barrel-aging and a secondary fermentation known as krausening. The Company has also pioneered another revolution, the 'extreme beer' movement, where it seeks to challenge drinker's perceptions of what beer can be. The Boston Beer Company has been committed to elevating the image of American craft beer by entering festivals and competitions around the globe, and is one of world's most awarded breweries at international beer competitions. As an independent company, brewing quality beer remains its primary focus. Although Samuel Adams beer is America's leading craft beer, it accounts for only one percent of the U.S. beer market. The Boston Beer Company will continue its independently-minded quest to brew great beer and to advocate for the growth of craft beer across America. Boston, September 28, 2015 — Jim Koch, the founder of The Boston Beer Company, brewer of Samuel Adams beers, and a key catalyst in the American craft beer revolution, is writing a book titled QUENCH YOUR OWN THIRST: BUSINESS LESSONS LEARNED OVER A BEER OR TWO. Based on more than thirty years of experience as a business owner and brewer, Koch offers unprecedented insights into the whirlwind ride from scrappy start-up to thriving public company. His innovative business model and refreshingly frank stories offer counterintuitive lessons that entrepreneurs and drinkers can apply to business and to life.
Koch’s anecdotes, quirky musings and bits of wisdom go far beyond brewing, and QUENCH YOUR OWN THIRST provides surprising advice on sales, marketing, hiring, and company culture. Koch narrates a fun, engaging guide for building a career or launching a successful business based on your passions and becoming successful while doing what you love.
Bob Miller, president and publisher of Flatiron Books, and Will Schwalbe, executive vice president of editorial development and content innovation at Macmillan, in partnership with The Boston Beer Company, announced to beer lovers at the Great American Beer Festival that the Macmillan division will publish QUENCH YOUR OWN THIRST.
“The idea of writing a book has been brewing for more than a decade,” said Koch. “When I meet people in bars, they are always curious about the early days of Samuel Adams and how I built the brewery to become what it is today. Then, about two years ago, I started writing in earnest, but it wasn’t until I connected with Will and the experienced team at Flatiron that I really understood what the book could be. I’m excited to share Quench Your Own Thirst with folks looking to start a business, build a business, or learn more about what makes The Boston Beer Company a company I want to work for.”
"Jim is one of our generation's iconic entrepreneurs," observed Schwalbe. "I've been a huge fan (and by fan, I mean drinker) of Samuel Adams. But until I met Jim, I had no idea what an unorthodox thinker he is. As someone passionately interested in business and beer, I was totally fascinated listening to Jim talk about the early days of the American craft beer movement and about the trials of starting a new business. This book gives everyone the opportunity I had to share a beer with one of the most original business minds of our time. Reading Quench Your Own Thirst is like having a great tavern chat, with lessons in business that read like a conversation shared over a pint or two with an adventuresome friend."
The World Exclusive rights to the book, which will be published in April 2016, were negotiated through Jim Levine at the Levine Greenberg Rostan Literary Agency who represented the author.
