WILK Friday BeerBuzz - 23 Aug 2013 - Crazy Mountain Lava Lake Wit & Mountain Livin’ Pale Ale w/Kevin Selvy

We love reaching west and exploring new breweries on the WILK Friday BeerBuzz.  There’s something special about Mountain Living that has always attracted me, so I love featuring (and visiting) Colorado breweries.

Today we were very excited to feature Vail Valley Colorado’s Crazy Mountain Brewery on the show…and what better way to do it than to “talk beer” with Brewmaster, co-founder and CEO Kevin Selvy.  Kevin started out as many brewers do, with an out-of-control homebrewing hobby.  Kevin soon transitioned that into a job at Anchor Brewing in San Francisco and it was in that very tasting room where Kevin met wife Marisa and the idea to open a Crazy Mountain Brewery was hatched.

Crazy Mountain opened it’s doors in 2010 becoming the first production brewery in Vail Valley, CO and they’ve quickly progressed to feature a lineup of core beers, as well as specialty and seasonal ales.  Crazy Mountain also features a variety of packing that includes not only kegs & bottles, but the perfect package for active living….cans.

It was a lot of fun getting the latest news on Crazy Mountain from Kevin and catching up on what they’ve been brewing.  You also have to love a brewery that officially lists “Doobie” the DOG as their CFO (as well as Isha & Luna doggies on staff).  With a lineup like that, of course their tasting room is dog-friendly too.

We didn’t forget to taste some Crazy Mountain beer today and Kevin was nice enough to send us some Lava Lake Wit.  This classic Belgian Wit uses a unique malt lineup that includes rolled oats & un-malted wheat.  Add in Coriander, Chamomile, Curacao orange peel and grains of paradise, and a really unique yeast strain and you have a great brew.  At 5.2% it’s perfect for summer, and in the 12oz can package it works well year round.

We also sampled the classic Crazy Mountain Mountain Livin’ Pale Ale.  This beer features a very hop-forward and fruit-forward flavor with the Simcoe & Citra hops on-board.  Once I heard two of my favorite hop varieties are in this beer, I knew this would be a favorite…and it was right.  This beer comes in at 5.7% ABV and it’s also loaded into the perfect Mountain Linin’ package….12oz cans.

We had a great time talking beer with Kevin today, and while they are not in PA just yet, you can find Crazy Mountain in parts of NY and other neighboring states so stay tuned.

Thank you to Kevin Selvy from Crazy Mountain Brewing, Nancy, John & Kyle for yet another

fun Friday.

  1. I asked Crazy Mountain Brewery brewmaster/CEO Kevin Selvy if he ever flies radio beer shows out to spend a few weeks on 'Crazy Mountain' and he seemed receptive to the idea! Packed and ready KS!

Loved the Crazy Mountain brews today in particular the Mountain Livin' Pale Ale for it's hoppy goodness.

The Lava Lake Wit is probably the smoothest blended wit I can recall tasting and it has this 2+2=5 synergy to it!

Thanks for joining us on the FBB today Kevin, thank you Bill from MyBeerBuzz.com and of course, thank YOU for listening.

    Best,
    John

  13. Thanks Chris. We're not specifically targeting cans, but we are seeing more and more breweries moving toward cans. Personally I think it's a great package and I see or taste no difference between a bottle and can.

  14. I live canned beer but then again I like to drink while I do yard work. JJ

  15. Me too. I go for cans first because they fit better crushed in my recycling bin. I see no difference in the beer itself. Erin

  18. Andy is not only a member of our beerbuzz bust trip crew and the WILK cruise crew, but I've personally known him for over 30 years. We were all shocked to hear what happened and we will all miss him very much.

  20. I'm a first time listener and new to the WILK beer show. You guys are great. I didn't realize our area had such a professional craft beer show. I heard the Crazy Mountain show today and it was really good. I went looking for your video and I'm blown away at all of your shows and the guests you've had too. I have found you now and I love craft beer so naturally I'll be tuning in every week from here on out. Cheers!

  21. I just stumbled across your show today and I didn't realize we had such a great craft beer show in NEPA. I heard the Crazy Mountain show and I've never had their beer. I went out to hear the show again on video and I'm blown away at how many shows you've done and how many guests you've had on the show. I've now watched the last seven and I plan to watch more of them this weekend. And Oh! I just saw you had Mitch Steele on and I love Stone. Cheers, I will be back to listen every week.
