Westfield River’s managing member and head brewer Sergio Bonavita announced today the local brewery has teamed up with Iron Heart Canning, a Connecticut based mobile canning operation, to begin the process of canning the company’s newly released Pop’s Old Fashioned Lager and their unique and flavorful IPA, Charlie in the Rye. WRBC and Iron Heart recently ironed out the details with Bonavita noting that he is continually striving for a better product in a package that the consumer prefers. “The new can package fit’s perfectly into the refrigerator, is perfect for the golf course, pool, beach or tailgate party.”
Many craft brewers are considering the move but WRBC is the first local brewery to make the investment. Some of the larger national craft brewers are now canning. “We’ve been bottling since opening a year ago” said Bonavita, “and this just makes sense. Canned beer actually tastes better. The inside liner prevents any metallic taste like days of old and the can protects the beer from exposure to UV light. The process is highly efficient and the cans are recycled again and again. The average beer can contains 40% recycled metal while the average beer bottle contains only 20% recycled glass… if you want the best beer money can buy, that beer is in a can, and isn’t craft beer all about the beer? Cans are perfect when you’re on the go, more durable, stackable, lighter weight and faster to chill.”
Bonavita also was happy to note that Westfield River Brewing Company has recently teamed with Commercial Distributing Company to handle their sales and distribution for Western Massachusetts. Pop’s Old Fashioned Lager, Charlie in the Rye, and Westfield River Brewing Company’s seasonal selections are currently sold in taverns, bars, restaurants and stores throughout Massachusetts from Stockbridge to Boston.
