WILK Friday BeerBuzz - 3 May 2013 Wyoming Valley Homebrewers w/Chuck Yarmey & Ed Elliot
It’s always a fun time when today’s guest visits our studio. Not only does he hold the record for most appearances on the show, but he’s also nice enough to bring us several unique beers to sample every time.
Chuck Yarmey founded the Wyoming Valley Homebrewers many moons ago, and he’s still very active in the club and in homebrewing locally. Chuck also brought with him current Wyoming Valley Homebrewers president, Ed Elliot. The Wyoming Valley Homebrewers were on the show today in support of the 2013 American Homebrewers Association (AHA) Big Brew that occurs tomorrow 5/4. Every year thousands of home brewers get together worldwide and on May 4th they don’t just brew beer, they symbolically contribute to the “Big Brew.” Each year the AHA totals up all of the beer brewed and releases the info. They also recommend standard recipes, and this year the recipes come from the GABF Pro-Am competition winners. While not everyone sticks to these recipes, this years Big Brew beers are:
More Fun Blonde (New Belgium / Jay Shambo)
Pointon’s Proper (RAM Restaurant & Scott Pointon)
Classic American Pilsner (Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery & Kyle Sisco)
One of my favorite parts of hosting the homebrewers (other than tasting the beer) is busting all the myths people may have about homebrewing…so I’ll attempt to bust many of them in one sentence….Homebrewing is NOT expensive, the process is NOT dangerous, you can build or buy your own equipment easily & affordably, it is NOT difficult to do and finally the beer can be VERY good.
If you’re interested in trying it or checking out the Big Brew day tomorrow, check out the wyomingvalleyhomebrewers.org website and contact the guys.
Of course we sampled beers today, and of course they were good. Today we sampled a great Double IPA as well as a really special bourbon barrel aged breakfast stout. These beer are not only very good examples of some classic beer styles, but also a testament to how good a home brew can be. My thanks to everyone who brewed these beers for us to sample on the show.
Thank you to Chuck Yarmey & Ed Elliot from the Wyoming Valley Homebrewers, Nancy, John & Joe for yet another
fun Friday.
The Friday BeerBuzz…bringing good beers and good people together. As always you can check out the video on-line at the WILK Friday BeerBuzz page by clicking HERE.

I have great neighbors but I wouldn't mind living next door to Ed Elliott or Chuck Yarmey!
ReplyDeleteThese fine gents have been making beer with the Wyoming Valley Homebrewers Club for 18 years and individually even longer. Both beers on today's show were outstanding!
Ed and Chuck, thank you for being on the show today, thanks Bill from MyBeerBuzz.com and as always thanks to you for listening!
Best,
John

I keep telling myself I'm going to home brew but I never do it. I'd love to see it maybe first before I dive in. I'll have to check it out. Ryan W
ReplyDeleteThank you Bil, Nancy, John and Joe for having us once again. Your show not only helps promote great commercial beers but helps promote brewing which is where it all starts.
ReplyDeleteWe had a great time and as always, it flies by way too fast.
And John, you just made me realize why my neighbors are so friendly. :-)
Cheers!
Chuck
Ryan...I can tell you it is not hard or expensive, it's not dangerous and the beer can come out really good. If you (or anyone) is interested in watching some brews in progress, head over to wyomingvalleyhomebrewers.org and someone will hook you up with details on tomorrows event. If not, the first Monday of every month in Sabatinis back room is the Wyo meeting that is open to anyone.
ReplyDeleteIf I can do it anyone can home brew. I use extracts but it's not hard at all and the beer is good. Jeremy
ReplyDeleteCheers to Chuck and Ed. How do I get my hands on that KBS clone? Amy
ReplyDeleteAmy...you'll have to check in with the guys. There may be some tomorrow or at a monthly meeting but I can't guarantee.
ReplyDeleteGreat show. Homebrewing is a great hobby. I don;t spend nearly as much on beer and my wife even enjoys what I brew. See you Sat. J
ReplyDeleteI really like how WILK not only promotes local breweries, but up and coming home brewers. I've always wanted to try this and I remember your Mr. Beer from a few years ago. I did try that with my brother in law and he loved the beer, but he kept the Mr. Beer. Is there an easy way to start with a brewing kit like that but better? Eric
ReplyDeleteEric. I'm sure someone form the club can give better advice, but yes there are starter kits of various levels and prices to get you going with extract (like Mr. Beer) or all-grain brewing. Many people build there systems manually and that too is affordable and easy. Soup pots, Coleman coolers, some fittings and a glass 5-gallon carboy and a few others things and you're on your way to all-grain.
ReplyDeleteNice show with home brewing today. I have to try this. That Bourbon stout sounded incredible. Anna L
ReplyDeleteI brew about twice a year, but you would be surprised how good the beer is. It's easy too. I'm still doing extract, but once I have a little more time, I plan to do the all grain type. Great to hear home brewers represented on the radio.

My wife says I have home brewing flu. I try to brew at least twice a month or more and yes I have a lot of home brew to share. I never thought about joining the club, but I do live near Exeter and the guys on the show today sounded like they can help me get better. Cheers! Nick
ReplyDeleteI'm brewing tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteChris
Home brewers are where all professional brewers start. Good show. Rob
ReplyDeleteEvery time I brew I invite friends over and we cook out at the same time and drink my previous batches while we brew a new batch. It's a great hobby. Ron W
ReplyDeleteI'm on my 38th batch now and I can say I only had one batch I didn't like. Maybe I'll have to check out the event on Saturday. Do I have to brew?
ReplyDeleteRay
Ray...no you can just watch the brewing. If you're interested, contact the guys at wyomingvalleyhomebrewers.org
ReplyDeleteI love the video once again.
ReplyDeleteVince
What is the song this week on the video? TJ
ReplyDeleteTJ at the end of the credits (you HAVE to watch the credits) are the musical credits for our theme song and the weekly new song.
ReplyDeleteThank you to Chuck Yarmey & Ed Elliot from the Wyoming Valley Homebrewers for joining us today and for bringing some really special home brews. The DIPA was wonderful and the KBS clone was amazing already and getting better with age. Be sure to check out the Big Brew tomorrow or one of the monthly club meetings at Sabatinis.
