Susquehanna Brewing - Southern Rye IPA Sampling & Firkin Event 5/26 @ Sabatini's

I was invited down to Susquehanna Brewing Co by our pal Jaime Jurado to sample the new Southern Rye IPA just brewed & kegged for Philly Beer Week.  The beer is an 8% ABV Imperial Rye IPA based on a homebrew recipe from Patrick O’Malley, an employee of the SBC Philadelphia Distributor.  This is the first dry-hopped beer & highest Original Gravity beer to come out of SBC so far, so I was honored to be the first outside the SBC staff to get to sample it last night.  (The stack of kegs behind me are all heading to Philly Beer Week with one exception…so read on!)

We did a side by side tasting of SBC Hopfive IPA and the new Southern Rye IPA and it was a really interesting sampling.  The new Southern Rye IPA is loaded with Simcoe in the nose and it has all the sticky & resinous hoppiness of a Double IPA with some of the backing flavors of the rye malt.  This beer uses an experimental hop as well one other hop (I don’t recall) and Simcoe; so the nose and finish are really grassy and citrusy.  Overall this is a really likeable beer and I’m excited to report that Philly Beer Week is in for a hoppy treat!

Want to sample a rare firkin of Susquehanna Brewing Co Southern Rye IPA for yourself?  Then get to Sabatini's Pizza in Exeter this Sunday (5/26) at 1PM to get a sample off the firkin you see in the photo above.  This is not only your chance to get to sample this rare one-time beer, but also a chance to sample the first Firkin keg coming from SBC so don’t miss it.
