From Sly Fox & Team Peggy:
Phoenixville, PA (May 2, 2013/mbb/)—On May 5, 2013, Peggy, a three-legged goat owned by brewer Colin Presby and veterinarian Christina Vittoria, will defend her first place spot in Sly Fox Brewing Company’s annual goat race. Peggy is the two-year reigning champion and another win this year would mark the first triple-win in the race’s 10-year history!
Three years ago, Presby rescued the two-week-old goat after she had been bitten on her back left leg by a dog. After infection spread to the point where an amputation was the only option, Peggy’s previous owners turned her over to Willow Creek Veterinary Center in Reading, PA. With the baby goat in pain and the vet bills mounting, Presby, then a large animal vet tech at the clinic, stepped in and became the Peggy’s new owner. Mere hours after her surgery, Peggy was comfortably standing and walking on just three legs.
Peggy quickly showed her eagerness to run, so Presby decided to enter her into the 2010 Sly Fox Bock Festival and Goat Race in Phoenixville, PA. The yearly Bock Festival is a celebration of German-style beers with the showpiece beer named after the winner of the goat race. Peggy stopped running halfway through her first heat, but came back strong in 2011. She inspired many people in the crowd with her determination and surprising skill on only three legs. Fueled by the chants of “Peg-gy! Peg-gy!” she dethroned the reigning two-time champion in a dramatic final heat finish.
“Of course she’s faster than me. She has three legs and I only have two!” said an excited Presby after the race. Peggy went on to win the 2012 race as well, impressing a crowd of over 4000 attendees by besting more than fifty other goats -- all four-legged.
From all this enthusiasm, Team Peggy was born. Peggy-themed T-shirts were printed and sold first in 2011, with proceeds benefiting the Humane Society of Berks County. Over the last few years, Team Peggy has raised awareness and over $3500 in funds to help neglected animals. Peggy has also made guest appearances at bars from Philadelphia, PA to Rochester, NY to promote Team Peggy and her namesake “Peggy Maibock” beer.
This year, Peggy will be joined at the May 5th Sly Fox race by her life partner, Simon, also a three-legged goat, who will be racing for his first time at the Bock Festival. For more on this inspiring story and to order T-shirts, follow Peggy’s adventures at Facebook.com/TeamPeggy
