Weyerbacher Brewing Company of Easton, PA and Brasserie de la Senne, of Brussels, Belgium, have collaborated and produced a new Belgo-American beer style, physically brewed in Belgium to be the official beer of Philly Beer Week 2013! Philly Beer Week is the nation’s biggest and best beer week celebration— something no beer drinker should miss!

Chris Wilson & Matt HohorstChris Wilson, the Head Brewer of Weyerbacher Brewing Company, was chosen out of sixteen Philadelphia area brewers to brew a collaborative beer with a Belgian brewer. Matt Hohorst, a Philadelphia area resident and drinker of fine beers, won a raffle at an event held at the Field House in Philly. As the winner, he was able to make the decision as to what brewery would participate in the collaboration. In addition, Matt and his then-girlfriend [wait for it, wait for it] were able to travel to Belgium with Chris Wilson, Tom Peters (owner, Monks Cafe, Nodding Head, Belgian Cafe), William Reed (owner, Standard Tap, Johnny Brendas), “Scoats” (owner, Grey Lodge, Hop Angel), Jennie Hatton (PR firm for Philly Beer Week), Ed Friedland (Origlio Beverage, our awesome Philly Distributor) and Ken Correll (Memphis Taproom) and others. It seems Matt really enjoyed the trip as during the group’s visit to Brugge, Matt proposed to his girlfriend!

Congratulations, Matt & Elisa!Chris worked with Brasserie de la Senne Owner and Head Brewer Yvan De Baets over the phone and email to hash out their ideas for a great Belgian-American collaborative brew which highlights both American and Belgian ingredients. Yvan is considered an expert in the roots of historic Belgian beer styles. His beers are delicious, generally quite hoppy for a Belgian beer and are available here in the US through Shelton Brothers.

Once in Belgium, the pair brewed the beer together on Brassarie de la Senne’s modern 20 hectoliter brewhouse making this a truly collaborative beer. The beer is a Belgo-American Dubbel with oats, molasses and a combination of American and European hops! This as-yet unnamed beer will be the official beer for Philly Beer Week 2013 and will be available at select bars throughout Philly Beer Week.

Brouwerij De Dolle, Esen, BEIn addition to brewing the beer at Brasserie de la Senne, the group was able to visit the incredible Brouwerij De Dolle in Esen, famous for their Ara Bier, Oerbiew, Stille Nacht and Dulle Teve; the tiny Brasseria de Cazeau in Cazeau, known for their Tournay and Saisons; De Struise Brouwers in Oostvleteren, known for their Pannepot Fisherman’s Ale and Black Albert; and last but certainly not least, Brasserie Cantillion in Brussels, known for their epic Lambic beers.

L-R “Scoats”, William Reed, Jennie Hatton, Chris Wilson in AntwerpThe group traveled to some of the most famous pubs in Belgium including ‘t Brugs Beertje and de Garre, both located in the medieval city of Brugge; Moeder Lambic in Brussels and many, many more! The group played ‘Threes’ wherever they went. It seems that many Euros were won and lost by all!
