First up I’ll admit I’m actually happy that a concerned citizen was watching out for the safety of the beer and alerted police that there were flames coming from a smokestack at F.X. Matt Brewing. Second off yes I’ll admit I added the flames to the above photo myself…but more importantly the flames are actually a GOOD thing. Details from UticaOD:
Utica firefighters were called to F.X. Matt Brewing Co. shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday for a possible chimney fire.
But it turned out to be nothing more than a flare burning off methane gas from the brewery’s new green energy system.
Brewery President and CEO Nick Matt, who was outside speaking with responders as they prepared to leave the scene, explained that the system is new and surmised that a passerby had seen the flames and called 911.
“Our anaerobic digester generates methane gas,” he said. “We have not started generating yet so we have to burn it off.”
