image
Here's another cool label (and beer) coming from Brian Strumke @ Stillwater Artisanal Ales called Premium Post Prohibition Style Ale.  This throwback label and name will come in at an easy drinking 4.5% ABV, and be packaged in 750ml bottles with label design done by Lee Verzosa.  Brewing and bottling will be done by Westbrook Brewing in Mt Pleasant, SC.

And this update on Facebook from Brian:  behold.. Stillwater Premium! a 'Post Prohibition' style ale brewed with Pilsner malt, corn, and rice.. hopped at 2lbs per BBL with Cluster, Northern Brewer, and Saaz.. and oh yeah.. fermented with a farmhouse yeast and 2 strains of brettanomyces to weigh in at 4.5% ABV.. word.

Further Update….Premium will be out around 1/6/2012

  1. Not quite sure if the naming of this beer is meant to be humorous or somehow ironic, etc., (especially in light of the use of a "farmhouse yeast and 2 strains of brettanomyces" [!]) but it's not based on fact.

The original Federal Alcohol Administration Act (1935) that regulated beer on the Federal level in the post-Repeal era (and, with amendments such as obviously this one, is still in effect) defined "Ale" as:

“...a malt beverage produced by top fermentation, possessing the characteristic flavor and aroma distinctive of ale, having an original gravity of not less than 13.50 Balling, containing not less than 5 per cent of alcohol by volume, and of light color.”

So, a 4.5 ABV wouldn't have been a legal "Post-Prohibition" ale in the US.

  2. Thanks Jess. Good info and I particularly like the not less that 5% ABV part. Maybe we can get Brian to comment...
