Clifton Park, NY -- Fri, Mar. 6, 2015 -- On Sun, Mar. 8, 2015, Shmaltz Brewing Company will brew the very first She'brew Beer to commemorate the 2nd Annual International Women's Collaboration Brew Day. The singular brewing effort is coordinated by the Pink Boots Society to empower female brewers and help women further their careers in the craft beer industry through scholarships and educational programs. Women around the world will suit up in their pink boots to brew variations of a single recipe. Proceeds from beer sales will be donated to the Pink Boots Society and a select charity, Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region (Albany, NY), whose mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold. Shmaltz celebrates their sisters in brewing with the debut of She'brew.

"The first She'brew Beer is an exceedingly delectable Triple IPA that will pour a rich blonde with a silky white head," says Richie Saunders, the lead brewer at Shmaltz Brewing. "The bouquet of She'brew will have distinct high alpha hops, complete with subtle pine notes. Yet, the focus will be on sultry fruit perfumes from a collection of specifically selected hops, such as Calypso, Citra and Amarillo. At a modest 12% ABV, She'brew will pack a wallop, but behind the numbers you will find a silky beer with a mild mouthfeel and softer body than what would be expected. She's hoppy, she smells great, she'brew!"

The rich history of American Brewing heralded by women dates back to the 18th century, when a good portion of brewers, otherwise known as brewsters, were women. Female brewers date back over 4,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. A quick history lesson: Sumerians had the beer goddess, Ninkasi. She was also known for her power to satisfy human desire. The Zulu people had a goddess of the rainbow and water, Mbaba Mwana Waresa, who taught the people of South Africa the art of making beer. Ashnan, the Mesopotamian and Sumerian Goddess of Grain, was also the goddess of drunkenness.

Throughout history, brewers were primarily women. Currently, women only account for 10% of jobs in charge of breweries. Today, we honor our goddesses in pink boots, the modern day Brewster, and savor their fermented libations. Along with a band of small craft breweries, Shmaltz encourages everyone to empower their sisters, daughters and friends to embrace the legacy of brewing and join the legions of brewsters in Pink Boots.

“The first She’brew Beer is a giant and luscious Triple IPA that pours bright apricot with a silky white head,” says Rich Saunders, the lead brewer at Shmaltz Brewing. “She’brew has a distinct and intense tropical fruit and floral aroma. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with juicy notes of pineapple, tangerine, white peach, and ripe orange all coming from nearly four pounds per barrel of Calypso, Citra, Crystal and Amarillo hops. She’brew’s bitterness is balanced with slightly sweet, bright notes coming from flaked oats, Maris Otter and Victory malt. At 11% ABV, She’brew hides her strength behind a beautifully balanced, drinkable triple IPA.”

Nikki Cavanaugh, co-founder of Rushing Duck Brewing Co. of Chester, NY, collaborated on the SHE’BREW recipe and joined the cast of characters at Shmaltz Brewing Co. including Dora Phillip, co-owner of The Hollow Bar + Kitchen, Jennifer Allen of Saratoga Eagle Sales and Service, Tara Akstull, Jaclyn Papa and Shmaltz Brewing Co. staff Brigid Clare, Liz Nagle, Amanda Gomez, Shelby Schneider, Chris Dufrain, Richie Saunders and Shmaltz Proprietor Jeremy Cowan. Photographer Heidi Benjamin helped the Brewsters glam out to the inspiration of the New York Dolls for the first SHE’BREW performance. “International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day was created to raise awareness of women working in the beer industry and to encourage women to enjoy and embrace beer,” says Denise Ratfield, IWCBD Coordinator. “Through the efforts of hundreds of women brewing together around the world, we are achieving this goal with each successive brew. In addition to the joy of camaraderie, we gain a special satisfaction in knowing that money raised funds the Pink Boots Society scholarship program and local charities.”

Ratifeld added, “This year’s IWCBD has been a brilliant success and we’re thrilled with the increased participation from last year’s inaugural event. We are amazed that so many women (and men) from all parts of the globe were inspired to become a part of this historic brew day.”

“After 19 years in business, we finally found the perfect reason to create SHE’BREW,” said Shmaltz Brewing Co. Proprietor, Jeremy Cowan. “IWCBD provided a great opportunity to brew a truly special beer which will benefit two very special organizations. We were proud to join women from around the world on the second annual IWCBD and are sure to make this an annual event.”

Shmaltz Brewing Co. will celebrate the first official SHE’BREW with a fundraiser at the brewery and tasting room in Clifton Park, NY, on Sunday, April 12 from 2-6pm. The event will feature SHE’BREW TRIPLE IPA, a guest brew from Rushing Duck Brewing Co and the freshest available beer from the Shmaltz year round and seasonal portfolio. Female fronted alternative rock trio Candy Ambulance will crank out live music throughout the day and Slidin’ Dirty from Troy, NY will be on hand with their famous gourmet sliders and a street fare inspired menu.
