WILK Friday Beerbuzz – 23 July 2010 (Brew Works Alchemy Ale)

WILKFridayBerbuzz7 I know I overuse this sentence, but we really did have a great time on the Friday Beerbuzz today  First off we welcomed Scranton’s own Beau Baden, brewmaster for Allentown Brew Works, Bethlehem Brew Works and Brew Works on the Green in the Lehigh Valley area.  Beau not only brews some fantastic beers but a wide variety of beers AND some really special beers…and today we were lucky enough to sample one. BrewWorksAlchemyBottles

Back in 1852 Allsops Brewery in England brewed a beer called Allsops Arctic Ale and this beer was sent off with Sir Edwin Belcher in search of the northwest passage to the Canadian Arctic.  Fast forward to 2010 and Chris Bowen, Dick Gethin, and John Chay are working with Brew Works to commemorate the voyage and more importantly the beer.  Chris Dick & John are departing on a 2000-mile motorcycle ride on Sunday July 25th from Bethlehem, PA to the Canadian Arctic where they will use primitive brewing equipment to brew a batch of Arctic Ale based on the Allsop’s recipe.
So how does this all relate?  Well as it turns out our beer of the day is Arctic Alchemy, a brew that Beau and Chris Bowen brewed at Allentown Brew Works in commemoration of the 1852 Allsops Ale and the 2010 motorcycle ride.  Needless to say at 12% ABV this beer is big and flavorful like a classic English Barleywine, but rich like a classic olde ale.

Bethlehem Brew Works will be holding a special event this Sunday (July 25th) to send the riders off on their journey and release the Brew Works Arctic Alchemy beer.  Check out thebrewworks.com for details.  Also bottles will be released and sold only at the brewery….and take my word for it….this is a beer well worth seeking out.

This was a wonderful beer and a very fun visit by Beau Baden.
All in all a very fun show and
once again I want to say t
hank you to Beau, John, Nancy (we missed you Nancy!), Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

  1. Bill, thanks for making arrangements for Beau Baden to join us with this outstanding beer this morning. A great beer, a great story to go with it too! Anyone reading this who hasn't made the trip to Allentown or Bethlehem Brew Works as yet, do yourself a favor and visit them asap! http://www.thebrewworks.com/

  2. I don't know how you guys do it. That was a great show and I'll definitely be driving to Bethlehem to get this beer.

  3. Friday Beerbuzzers:

I don't know how you do it, but I think this is the 4th beer you've featured that you managed to get on the radio before it was available to the general public. The beer gods musty love you guys and your show is the best! Can't wait for next week's show. Will it be another new beer??

  4. Friday Beerbuzz = best local beer show!

  5. I have to try this beer, but my husband says I say that about all ofthe Friday Beerbuzz beers. Fantastic show.

  6. Thanks everyone. The beer was wonderful and I'd recommend getting don to Bethlehem Brewworks on Sunday to se the riders off on their journey AND get a taste of this beer!

Stay tuned next week for the teaser for next Friday's show.

  7. I finally caught the whole show live today. I always thank you guys but I also want to thank Beer SOlutions and Sabatinis for advertising on the show. My tap system came from Beer Solutions and I love it. I'm also a regular in the Sabatinis beer cooler and they do a great job with amazing beers. The best beer businesses on the best beer show. Now if I could only get to have a beer with you guys!

  8. Beau knows beer. I hadn't really paid much attention to his beers but I'm anxious to try this one. I love the Rude Elph too.

  9. A+ Bill John & Joe and where's Nancy?

  10. Nancy is on vacation and she'll be joining us next week for the Friday Beerbuzz....and thank you everyone.

  11. Last week I tuned in early to hear the show before and after the Friday Beerbuzz. This week I started listening on Thursday to try to guess the beer. You all do a good show too and I love the beers.

  12. A+ Beer Gods and godesses. I like Beau so hopefully he comes on again and again.

  13. I was debating going to the brunch for Alchemy but you have me convinced it's worth the ride down. Save me some bottles Beau!!

  14. Two home runs in a row. Two great guests. I like the 2x4 from Bavarian but I can't wait to try the Alchemy Arctic Ale.

    Rock on Friday beerbuzz

  15. I'll give you credit for not simply featuring the same old summer beers we see all the time. You've been risky and edgy with your picks and I think it's made you a much more interesting show. I really love Webster.

  16. Two Barleywines in three week in the middle of July. What gives? Can't you find any summer beers?

  17. Hey...even my Mom listens to the show and I'm not sure if that's good or not :/ Fun stuff and good beers, how can you go wrong. No wonder she listens.

  18. Some of these beers are way out of my league but at least you make me want to try them. I'm not sure I can drink a 12% beer but I'll give it a try just in case.
