August 28, 2023. Hood River, OR — Ferment Brewing today announces the unveiling of a new West Coast IPA called Roaming Spirit, available in 16oz 4-pack cans. The beer releases alongside two long standing favorite seasonals — Helles and The Sentinel.
Roaming Spirit is deep golden in color with a bold piney flavor, a kick of citrus hoppiness, and a pronounced bitterness. Brewmaster Dan Peterson chose Talus hops, which he calls “a good team player hop,” to accompany the resinous and grapefruit-like characteristics of Chinook, Comet and Ekuanot hops. To Ferment’s brew team, the really exciting part of this beer is the yeast.
“We ferment most of our ales with our house ale yeast, including our first batch of Roaming Spirit,” said Peterson. “We wanted more clarity in the version going into cans, so we fermented the next batch with a strain we’ve never used in the Ferment brewhouse. Not only is the new batch incredibly different visually, the bitterness pops and the fruity esters from the house yeast are all but gone.”
“To achieve the clarity of west coast IPAs we brought in a special yeast strain, said Peterson. “We also fermented a batch with our house ale yeast strain just to see what would happen. Not only is the new batch incredibly different visually, the bitterness pops and the fruity esters from the house yeast are all but gone. It’s really fun to drink them side by side” For a limited time the brewery is offering a unique opportunity to compare the two versions while they are both on tap at Ferment Brewing in Hood River.
In addition to Roaming Spirit, Ferment is releasing Helles and The Sentinel. Helles, showcasing Ferment’s passion for clean beers, is made with water from a spring at the base of Mt. Hood, pilsner malt, Tettnanger noble hops, and a time-honored European lager yeast strain. The Sentinel is Ferment’s tribute to the Columbia River Gorge — a saison brewed with Doug Fir tips foraged at the base of the mountain and fermented with a wild yeast harvested on the slopes of Mt. Hood.
Roaming Spirit and Helles are available on draft and in 16oz 4-pack cans throughout specialty bottle shops and grocery stores in Oregon. The Sentinel is available on draft and in 500mL bottles throughout Oregon as well.
