Beer and mental health, ah yes. It’s common for alcohol to have an affect on a person’s mental health. It’s common for people to drink in our society. Drinking is a social activity and many people go out to bars to hang with friends or hit on people. Bars are great places to meet potential dates and hang out tell the bartender your problems. But there are potential dangers to drinking alcohol and they can impact
your mental health.
Many people have a beer after work to unwind or drink a cold one with dinner. This is common and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. There are other people who use beer to self-medicate though. Alcohol has a calming effect on people, especially when you suffer from anxiety. People who deal with sleep issues, especially insomnia, often use beer to get to sleep. This can become habit forming and before they know it they are dependent upon that nightly beer to get sleep. You don’t have to use beer to get rest, and there are other ways to cope with this issue rather than relying upon alcohol.
There are ways in which beer is actually healthy for your mental health. There’s been research that indicates that certain kind of beer increases the production of breast milk in nursing mothers. You may have heard the expression “pump and
dump,” meaning that when new mothers are nursing they can drink alcohol but they need to get rid of their breast milk within a certain time frame after they consume booze. This is not necessarily the case with beer. Beer can be helpful to mom and baby when nursing. Here’s how that relates to mental health: mom is happy when she is feeding her baby knowing that her infant is getting enough milk. That makes her happy and her baby content.
Drinking can also be a depressant in addition to helping people feel good. When people have bipolar disorder, they are told to avoid alcohol. Some people who aren’t managed for bipolar disorder, for example, use beer to soothe them when they are
experiencing a manic or hypomanic episode. This is habit forming and unhealthy for them but they might not be aware or may be in denial of the negative effects of beer on their mental health.
With anything, drinking beer is something that one can enjoy in moderation but can become addictive if a person isn’t careful. If you think you are becoming addicted to drinking, consult a therapist. It’s important to take care of your mental health and
that involves alcohol usage. Drinking beer could be a way to unwind or it could be an unhealthy habit or dependency. Learn what it means for you.
