This morning we get to see several new sour beers coming to the Vintage Series from Adelbert’s Brewery in Austin, TX: Raspberry Sour, Blueberry Sour and Passion Fruit Sour. These are all barrel aged (18-months) sour ales aged with fruit and they will all be packaged in 750ml bottles. Stay tuned for release details.
From Adelbert’s:
Adelbert’s Brewery is pleased to announce the release of Passion Fruit Sour, the first in a new fruited sour series available exclusively at the brewery. Passion Fruit Sour, which will release on February 10th, has been nicknamed a “vacation in a bottle.”
The brewery blends in passion fruit with a variety of house yeast strains during its 18 months of aging in oak barrels to develop a refreshing, tropical sour ale balanced with just the right amount of unique barrel notes.
Scott Hovey, Founder & Brewmaster of Adelbert’s Brewery said, “Every batch in this series will taste unique. We use a blend of several barrels for each sour. Some were inoculated naturally while others were inoculated with strains we chose. We don’t use a standard house yeast strain or base beer recipe. We change what we put into the barrels each time to give more complexity to the blends.”
Confirmed fruit sour releases will include Passion Fruit Sour, Raspberry Sour and Blueberry Sour. Several other flavors are still in the testing phase and will be announced once the brewery is happy with the blends. Future release dates will be announced on social media and by press release.
Hovey added, “We select the barrels to blend for each individual batch based on what tastes best at that time. In fact, we already dumped 20% of the barrels aged because we didn’t like the flavors that developed.”
In light of the brewery converting to a brewpub permit in 2016, the brewery plans to use the new license as an opportunity to test the response to limited release beers before evaluating for larger market release. Blackberry Barrel of Love, released in late 2016, and the fruited sours will be the first of many such beers to become available.
