A big thank you to everyone at Abita for giving me the opportunity to try an early sample of their Macchiato Espresso Milk Stout. They were also nice enough to send along a sample of their Strawberry Harvest Lager, but more on that later.
Macchiato Espresso Milk Stout uses cold brewed Espresso Dolce beans from PJ’s Coffee, and you’ll definitely find it in the nose and flavors. This beers pours a really nice dark brown color with a really pretty and soft head….and as soon as you talk aroma, you’re talking coffee. It’s prominent and pleasant in the nose and really backed up well by the flavors.
The taste is roasty and loaded with coffee and espresso with a little smoky backbone. The finish is dry with what tasted almost like licorice to me. The soft creaminess of a traditional milk stout is masked a bit by the coffee, but the balance is pleasant. I’m not a coffee drinker, so I’m sure some of the subtle flavors are a little lost on me, but all in all a really likeable dark beer.
As a bonus and actually our first sampling before Macchiato we were lucky enough to sample some Abita Harvest Strawberry Lager 2015. This beer is wheat based and it’s made with local strawberries. This beer has become one of Abita’s more popular brews and I can see why. It’s lighter mouthfeel and refreshing finish make it really drinkable, and the lower ABV (4.2% ABV) makes it really sessionable. The strawberry brings just the right level of subtle flavor to the party and the 12oz can is the perfect packaging for this beer.
Be sure to try both of these beers and let me know what you think. These are really unique brews and I’m pretty sure you’re going to like them. Thank you to Abita for letting me try an early sample.
