From Harpoon:

The competition was tougher than ever for this year’s Harpoon Kettle Cup – our annual employee brewing competition. But after weeks of formulating recipes, brewing beer, and taste testing all 30 entries (it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it!), ten beers made it through to the finals:

  • Galactic Sunshine, brewed by the National Accounts Sales Team with Tom Knight
  • Hazelnut Milk Stout, brewed the Floriduh Sales Team with Steve Theoharides
  • “BJCP” brewed by Chris Lyon and John Cataldo
  • Nitro Red, brewed by Brad Marks, Neville Menday, and Nick Voigt
  • Real Midnight Soiree, brewed by Steve Theoharides and Joel Prickett
  • Hoppy Braggot, brewed by Steve Theoharides
  • Peanut Butter Stout, brewed by Kevin Eibensteiner, John Baker, and Ed Valenta with Charlie Cummings
  • Blackberry IPA, brewed by Jamie Rudavsky with Ken Herman
  • Cacao! Brewed by Liz Melby and Adam Bailey with Charlie Cummings
  • Lemon/Rosemary Wit, brewed by the Boston Quality Lab Team

But one beer set itself apart from the rest. We are excited to announce that this year’s coveted prize goes to brewer Steve Theoharides for his Humble Braggot! We chatted with Steve - who, by the way couldn’t be more humble-about his winning beer. Here’s what he had to say:

“Honey and double IPA, could you imagine a better pairing? In an attempt to do something a bit different, I put a modern twist on this obscure craft category. True to the Braggot style, half the beer’s fermentables came from Clover Honey, leaving a subtle sweetness lingering at the finish. Up front and on the nose are overwhelming orange notes imparted from a copious amount of El Dorado hops. Not too sweet, not too bitter, it strives to offer the best of both.”

Steve’s winning beer will hit the shelves in 2015 as part of the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series. Stay tuned for details on a release date, the official name, and his sketched face on the back of the label. In the meantime, let’s raise a pint to Steve!
