We brought you news of this beer back in April, and now the official word from Summit:
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Summit Brewing Company today announces the release of the third beer from the limited-release Union Series: Southern Cape. The Union Series explores the latest malts and hops in the industry by focusing on brewing with new raw materials and ingredients. Southern Cape will be available the week of June 9.
Southern Cape draws its inspiration from the Sparkling Ales traditionally brewed around Adelaide in South Australia. The fruitiness of an Aussie yeast strain combines with New Zealand and South African hops to produce a gentle aroma of pineapple and mango, while malts from Chile and Australia provide a soft toasted note and rounded finish. This is a lower alcohol beer with a refreshing hop bitterness and lively carbonation. It is unfiltered and slightly cloudy for greater flavor and aroma.
“The beer derives its name from the Southern Cape hop farms in South Africa. All four countries supplying ingredients also have one of the four great capes used for navigation in the Southern Hemisphere,” said Damian McConn, Head Brewer at Summit. “This southern inspired ale will go great with a warm summer afternoon!”
Southern Cape marks the third entry in Summit’s Union series, where new and more obscure ingredients are combined with traditional techniques to produce limited-availability beers. While most brewers focus on the ingredients required to produce a certain style or idea of a beer, the Union concept is based upon first acquiring new ingredients then combining them in creative ways.
