From our pal Jim Koch at Samuel Adams:
When I brewed the first batches of Boston Lager in my kitchen, e-mail didn't even exist. So as you can imagine, it is a little surreal for me to be sending this message out to you 30 years (and countless Boston Lagers) later.
Samuel Adams has been a big part of my life since I brewed the first batch of Boston Lager in 1984. There have been so many great memories and I am excited to share some of my favorite moments with you through this timeline we put together.
I hope you’ll enjoy exploring our journey and that you’ll take some time to share your favorite Samuel Adams moments with me by tagging them with#30YearsofSam on Instagram.
Since 30 is a pretty big milestone, we’re going to throw a pretty big party. We’ll be celebrating our 30th Anniversary as part of the Boston Calling Music Festival! Join us at Boston's City Hall Plaza on May 23rd-25th
to raise a pint to 30 amazing years.
We brew around 60 different styles of beer a year, including a variety of IPAs. We’re excited to release our newest IPA Hopology pack – this pack runs the gamut of IPAs, including a Belgian IPA, a Baltic IPA, a Rye IPA (newly created for this year’s pack), and even an IPL. Learn more about the beers in this pack:
Roggen Wolf: This smooth artful brew entices with its subtle sweetness yet reveals a cagey bite. The peppery spice of German rye in this IPA is complemented and sharpened by the undercurrent of piney and citrusy hop character of Ahtanum and Galaxy hops. Want to learn more about this new beer? Check out the blog for a Q&A with our nano brewer Eryn.
Grumpy Monk: The distinctive character of Belgian yeast with its spicy clove and fruit notes can be reimagined when combined with the brazen hop character of an IPA. These hops impart a citrusy, piney, and earthy flavor that’s balanced by a roasted malt sweetness.
Tasman Red: This wily red IPA gets its character from the Tasmanian hops that are full of grapefruit, pine, and earthy notes creating a bold flavor that threads throughout the taste. The hops are balanced by a core of roasty malts that give this brew body and richness with hints of toffee.
Third Voyage: We were inspired by Capt. James Cook whose 3rd voyage made him the first to navigate a treacherous route from England to New Zealand to the Pacific Northwest. Using Cascade hops from each of these three regions we created a brew that’s citrusy, earthy and full of bold character.
Double Agent IPL: Brewing innovation is about asking "what if?". What if we gave an IPA a new identity and used some of our favorite West Coast hops, with their grapefruit, piney, & tropical fruit character, in a lager? The result is this boldly hoppy & flavorful brew with the crisp smoothness of a lager.
Whitewater IPA: The crisp white wheat, sweet citrus orange peel, and spicy coriander of a white ale form the base of this refreshing brew. The big hoppiness and grapefruit notes of an IPA bring the flavor to a new bold level. Our addition of apricots brings these flavors together and creates a soft fruit undertone and balance.
The IPA Hopology Variety Pack is available now – pick it up while you can!
