Coronado - Stupid Stout Imperial Stout - A First Tasting

image
Just last week we brought you news that the classic Coronado Stupid Stout would return in 2013.  First brewed in 2008 as a traditional English Stout, the recipe was reworked to add a west-coast flair in 2011.  Adding in a “stupid amount of hops” was just what this beer needed and I’m excited to put this new American Imperial Stout to the test.

Thank you to Coronado Brewing for sending the great west coast surprise.  It was very cool to find a bottle of Stupid Stout waiting for me when I hit home tonight, but even more fun to have the matching pint glass and coasters….and naturally we had to try all three out together.

This Crown Series beer has a really beautiful bottle for 2013, the yellow and black contrast looks great and it also gives you a hint at the color you’re about to pour.  Coronado Stupid Stout pours black as night with a lofty tan head.  The aroma hits you first with some chocolate-y and coffee notes followed by the big hops that even though I expected, were still a pleasant surprise in the nose.

The mouthfeel for Stupid Stout is sticky and pleasing and the aroma and depth of flavors were really nice.  This beer is complex, and I pulled out flavors of chocolate, vanilla and even some roasty notes.  There’s coffee in there too and perhaps even a little earthy and toffee flavors as well.  Stupid Stout finishes clean and hoppy, with just enough sweetness to make you want another sip.

At 9% ABV, this American Imperial Stout will get your attention so it’s perfect for sharing with friends and family.  Available in 14 states (including PA), Stupid Stout will be packaged in 22oz cases and kegs, and for those living near the brewery, stay tuned for a  small-batch barrel aged version coming in the future.  Be sure to try this one and see for yourself…it’s a west coast beer perfect for chilly east-coast nights!
