ESCONDIDO, CA (Oct. 21, 2013) – The newly opened Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station was recently awarded the 2013 People’s Choice Orchid at the San Diego Architectural Foundation’s annual Orchids & Onions awards ceremony. The San Diego Architectural Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and raising awareness of outstanding architecture, planning and urban design throughout the San Diego region. In 2007, Stone Brewing Co.’s first restaurant, Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Escondido, won the same coveted award after the project was hailed as “A bold symphony of concrete, stone and steel.”

The People’s Choice distinction is awarded to the project that receives the most votes from the public during an online poll, and Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station won by a wide margin. According to the
Orchids & Onions website, “…Stone’s second brewery and farm-to-table restaurant in San Diego was also the most beloved of this year’s People’s Choice Orchid nominees. In a landslide victory, the people of San Diego agreed that they were extremely happy to add another Stone brewery to the city’s expansive craft beer landscape.” They go on, “…Stone’s impressive new brewery and restaurant is a resounding success and definitely a favorite new place for San Diegans to enjoy a beer or three.”

“We are absolutely thrilled to receive the People’s Choice Orchid,” said Stone CEO and Co-founder Greg Koch. “This award means a lot to us, as it’s gratifying that folks are expressing that Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station was a project worth the more than four years we put into building it. Our objective was to create a truly unique experience to enjoy great beer and our eclectic cuisine with friends and family. We appreciate the clear message that we succeeded with our goals!”

Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station opened May 2013 in the historic Naval Training Center located in San Diego’s Point Loma community. Stone celebrates the venue’s prior history as a U.S. Navy mess hall while introducing new industrial and organic features of metal, concrete, reclaimed wood, plant life, water and fresh air. The restaurant encompasses more than 20,000 square feet of indoor dining, bars, banquet space and a 10-barrel brewery. The expansive outdoor areas include two bocce ball courts, outdoor cinema/event space and a 30,000-square-foot creatively landscaped patio garden with water and fire features.

Koch collaborated with restaurant designer
David Robinson Design Inc. and brought to life the organic-becoming-industrial look and feel Stone is known for. Koch also worked with Schmidt Design Group, Inc. on the site’s gardens. The drought-tolerant plant palette provides a thoughtful blend of color and texture to enhance the character of the space. Large iconic boulders and stones can also be found in the gardens, further reinforcing a connection to Stone Brewing Co. Numerous reclaimed construction materials found on site and regionally were integrated throughout the various spaces.
