From Chicago Business:
Nostalgia is a powerful thing. That's what Chicago entrepreneur Frank Manzo is hoping will make his revival of the old Drewrys Brewing Co. a success in the Chicago market.
The story of Drewrys goes back to 1877, when it was founded in Canada by E.L. Drewry. Following Prohibition, Drewry brought the brewery to Evansville, Inc., in 1940 and later opened branches in South Bend, Ind., Chicago and other Midwestern cities.
Called “an American Lager with a German accent,” Drewrys hit its peak in the 1960s and was at one time the 10th-largest beer brand in the nation. The massive brewery consolidation in the 1970s, where only a few major brands came to dominate the market, marked the end of the beer in 1972.
