BOYNTON BEACH, FL - Due South Brewing Co. has released "UXO", an American Strong Ale paying homage to Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technicians that have served in the US Military. UXO is a term EOD Techs use meaning unexploded ordnance.
The beer is a big one, clocking in at 8% ABV (alcohol by volume). At 67 IBU's, it also has plenty of hops. Mike Halker, founder and head brewer at Due South chose to brew this beer for a simple reason - he's a former EOD Tech himself. He served with the 61st EOD out of Fort Sill, OK.
"When developing the idea for the beer I kept coming back to the style name - American Strong Ale." Halker says. "It reminded me of my time in the military. EOD Techs do everything from kneel over live grenades to work on full scale chemical and nuclear weapons. The folks that wear the EOD badge deserve our utmost respect and this beer is my way of saying thanks for the risks they take every day. These people are awesome and I'm extremely thankful for the opportunity to experience being a part of that community."
Halker, who is also the President of the Florida Brewers Guild, hopes the craft beer industry's visibility can promote more than just the beer itself. "If we, as brewers, all raise awareness and contribute to causes that are close to us personally, we can make great things happen."
A portion of the proceeds from UXO will be donated to the EOD Warrior Foundation, a group that helps active duty and veteran wounded, injured, or ill EOD Techs and their families, as well as offers assistance to families of wounded and fallen EOD soldiers.
Due South Brewing Co.'s products are distributed by Brown Distributing from Key West to Daytona Beach, Florida.
