From Alaskan Brewing:
JUNEAU, Alaska Alaskan Brewing Co. was awarded a gold medal in the “American Pale Ale” category at the 2013 United States Open Beer Championship for its Freeride American Pale Ale. Breweries from around the world sent in more than 2500 beers representing 68 different categories for the championship, the only brewery competition to include professional breweries and award-winning home-brewers. Judges from England, Canada and the United States announced the winners this week.
First brewed on Alaskan's pilot system in 2010, Alaskan Freeride APA became a local favorite through Alaskan's Rough Draft series of draft experimental brews available in Alaska only. Alaskan then shared Freeride APA with select draft locations in the lower 48 via their Rough Draft Export series in the spring of 2012. Its popularity inspired Alaskan to release it again in March 2013, this time as a new year-round, bottled product.
"Some of us on the brew crew spend a lot of our free time in Alaska's backcountry, skiing and snowboarding," said Alaskan BrewerTyler Lindquist. "The APA grew out of our attempts at brewing the perfect après-ski beer, but it turned into basically a great après-anything beer."
This is the first award for the Freeride APA, an auspicious start for a beer that’s been in general release for less than six months. Fans of Alaskan took the announcement as an opportunity to share their feelings about the beer on the company’s social media channels.
“It is good beer, congratulations guys!” said Chris Schloe.
Linda Huie chimed in, “I love this beer!! I just wish you sold it where I live…closest place is Milwaukee…However, I love Milwaukee, so it will be worth the trip!”
Alaskan Freeride APA is available throughout Alaskan Brewing Co.’s 14 state distribution area in 12 oz bottles and on draft.
