Old Redwood brewing Co a nano-brewery in Windsor, Ca., has amassed such a strong following that members recently asked to pay for beer that will not be released until the end of 2013. Because ORBC releases a different beer every month, the brewery allocates these ‘futures’ to people who not only have never tried the beer but who also don’t know what type of beer they will receive.
The very real possibility that a release will sell out before the beer hits the tasting room is part of the reason futures are in demand. The brewers have grown accustomed to demand exceeding supply since opening in August 2012, when locals flocked to the new tasting room to sample current releases, listen to local bands, and pet the in-house pup. Just a month after opening their doors, ORBC sold out of their entire production, and a “Sorry, We’re Closed” sign hung in their door for three weeks while they readied the next batch and expanded their system to its current three barrels. In the tasting room, there are no pints, no TVs, and nothing that wasn’t brewed on-site by resident brewers and co-owners, Bobby Anderson and Mike Stewart. Beers are sold in 750ml bottles in the tasting room and shipped to beer ‘family’ who sign up to receive a monthly allocation.
“We’ve been incredibly humbled and amazed by the support from the community,” said co-owner, Dominic Foppoli. “When we were asked if we would sell futures of our beers, we were incredulous at first but embraced it as a sign of the loyalty we’ve received over the past few months. I think it’s a great turn for the craft beer industry.”
Though popular in the wine industry, selling futures is rarely considered an option by beer producers, and the sale of ORBC futures is just one way this story represents an intersection of the beer and wine industries in California. Futures of ORBC beer were recently sold at an event held by the Orange County Wine Society at which Foppoli spoke. Foppoli also co-owns Christopher Creek Winery, Benevolo Wines, and Dom Whitney Wines with other friends and family members in Sonoma County.
